    Description

Currently, along with people to help in our charitable school, we are also looking for someone to help do some renovations in our old house. This would include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, and painting. If you can offer these skills, we would wave the $5.00 a day fee we normally charge.

We are an NGO in the Indian Himalaya and run the School, a charitable school offering quality education to children from over 25 different villages. I am a Canadian anthropologist married to my husband, who was born and raised in our village which we currently reside in. We met 8 years ago and have been married seven years. We have dedicated our lives to improving the lives of children in our area. Volunteers who come to live and work with us have an opportunity to learn about the culture first hand, as they live with us in the village. We have 220 students and classes for Lower Kindergarten to class 8. Volunteers help in many ways, by teaching ESL, assisting in classes, doing arts and crafts, music, and many often teach in classrooms when we are short of teachers -- which is often. All of our volunteers form a deep connection with the children and the villagers, and often find it difficult to leave. Our village is very small -- just 400 people, so volunteers are welcomed into the community and take part in all cultural activities. We are not far from the hill station of Mussoorie so volunteers usually go there for shopping and site seeing on weekends. Our rooms are clean and simple, and our meals are vegetarian. Everything is simple here. Our toilets are mostly Indian, squat toilets, but we have hot water for bathing, and do our best to make you as comfortable as possible.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in either teaching in our school, and/or helping with our new project -- creating an organic garden and growing herbs in our green house. Proceeds from this project will help offset the costs of running such a large school. Volunteers in the school help new students with language and subjects, arts and crafts, assisting teachers, and often teach subjects if they are here long term. We invite volunteers who would like to stay more than one month.

All we ask of you is that you come with an open mind, and a willingness to learn and share. This is an amazing culture, as we are a tribal area. Be respectful of the villagers and of us. Try to conform your habits so you may blend in and not offend anyone. You may not like all of the customs in the village, but try to understand why they are there, rather than trying to change them. Our best advice is to consider our village (villages) as someone's living room, and conduct yourself accordingly.

If you are volunteering in our school, ask yourself how you can help best in the time that you have here. Your contribution should support our goals, not go against what we are trying to achieve. So if you are asked to do a job, and you are not comfortable with it, please tell us, and we will do our best to find another job for you, but we hope that you will at least try your best. If you have ideas which you think will help our children, please share them with us first before going ahead on your own. We are always open to ideas and suggestions. Tell us about your skills and hobbies, as you may be able to share them with us and our children. We appreciate our volunteers who come with an open mind, and who are willing to go the extra distance in helping our students. We are passionate about our children and our school, and love it when that same passion is taken up by our volunteers.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

As you are staying in a tribal village in the heart of the Himalayan foothills, you will be rewarded everyday with stunning scenery and the opportunity to learn first hand what life is like in a Jounpur Village. From October to May, there are many weddings in the area, which you are welcome to attend. Secondly, you have the opportunity to learn what is involved in running a charitable school and striving for excellence in education when resources are limited.

    What else ...

As we are in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand we are close to several trekking destinations: Hark -i-doon, Gangotri, Yamunotri, and several less known trekking routes as well. Rishikesh -- the yoga capital of the world is just a 3 hours drive from here. For local entertainment, many volunteers like to go to near-by Kempty Falls for snacks, and shopping for basic amenities, but Mussoorie (40 minute jeep ride) will offer more opportunities for other needs such as internet, restaurants, western food, etc. Internet is also available in Kempty, about 3 kilometers from the school.
