    Description

We live in the suburban city of Upper Hutt which is at the base of the Tararua Ranges and 30 minutes from Wellington. We have four adult children, most of whom are exploring their own way in the world. I have a passion for travelling, and we love to meet, learn and share with people from other countries.

We are interested to host and assist travelers in exchange for mainly outdoor jobs at our home, and at Nigel's workshop. Jobs may include firewood, propery maintance and outdoor cleaning. We are looking for mature helpers who have some Workaway or comparable references/experience.

If you are keen to explore some of New Zealand's bush, hills and coastlines we are in a perfect location. We are keen to have guest who are open-minded, enthusiastic, sociable, adventurous and hardworking.

We live in a quiet street which is a short walk to Silverstream shopping village and public transport. We are renovating our house and establishing the gardens. We supplement our diet from our vegetable patch and the produce that the hunter-gatherers in our family bring home. We have a dog named Stella.

We ask for 25 hours help per week. Nigel is a retired bee farmer so there maybe a small amount of bee work if you are comfortabel with this.

In return for your help we offer you a private bedroom, and a shared bathroom. Evening meals will be a shared.
We have WIFI access if you have your own device.
We are within walking distance to public transport, the village centre and the river.
    We are a non-smoking household.
We can ONLY accept Helpers who have their own travel (including medical) insurance!

Please contact us for more information if you are interested to stay with us.
    Warm regards,
    Jacqui and Nigel

Upper Hutt is a lovely valley at the base of the Tararua Ranges and a 30 minute train ride to central Wellington. If you are visiting NZ for the great out doors the Tararua's supply endless tramping tracks dotted with multiple huts if you want an overnight adventure. Belmont and Kaitoke Regional Parks are great resources for camping, bush walking, mountain biking, gorge wading, and river swimming (in the summer) and are both easily accessible. You can take a tour of the local regional park that provided locations for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wellington is our nation's capital, which is a truly beautiful city and good for art, entertainment and coastline if your into fishing or diving. Wellington is the home of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

If you have your own transport the close by Wairarapa is the source of many more adventures and places to discover - Cape Palliser Seal Colony, Castlepoint, Mt Holdsworth Forest Park, Patuna Chasm, Blue Rock Glow Worm Caves and Lake Ferry. For wine lovers there is the Martinborough Wine Tours.

We are in an ideal location if you are coming from or travelling to the South Island on the Picton/Cook Strait Ferry.
The weather like all of New Zealand is unpredictable and so you would need to have clothes for all weathers.
