We are, architecturally speaking something of a pioneering (albeit slightly mad) project! We have thus far racked up a tonne of firsts: 1) the first hotel built with recycled containers in South America, 2) the first hotel in the southern hemisphere to make its own wine, 3) the first sustainable hotel in the port city and 4) the first ever registered winery in the city of Valparaiso. Also we just became the most awarded project in the history of Chilean edition of Great Wine Capitals: The Best of Wine Tourism Awards winning a total of 6 awards for: innovative wine tourism experience (1st), architecture & landscapes, accommodation, art & culture, sustainable wine tourism practices (all 2nds) and finally wine tourism services (3rd).

Aside from the architectural/winemaking craziness we also have an important component of social responsibility incorporated into the project: that is to say we truly believe that we will make Cerro Mariposas a better neighbourhood by teaching everyone to recycle, get into one of Chile's best natural products (fermented grape juice!!!) and just generally take better care of our planet. In summary WE WANT YOU to join in and help us to make the magic happen!!!

This is still first and foremost a construction project so we are looking for volunteers who are not afraid to get their hands dirty, who like to work hard and who ideally have at least a little experience working in construction. Right now we need help with painting (hey, there's a lot of metal around here!), polishing and sealing cement floors, housekeeping, running events (if you have waiting, bartending, DJing experience we will mainly need your help on late afternoons and evenings), preparing and serving breakfast to the hotel's guests, building furniture out of pallets etc.

We are located in the residential Cerro Mariposas neighbourhood which is only a short (5 min) bus ride from the better known tourist neighbourhoods of Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre. Volunteers are housed both at the hotel and also at my house (3 mins walk away). Whilst couples get their own room single volunteers will generally share a single container apartment (2 per room). Both the house and hotel enjoy insane views of the harbour and coastline to the north.

Cheers and we look forward to working with you!

Preference will be given to couples, volunteers who speak English and who can stay at least 3 weeks. Also we require volunteers to be a minimum of 25 years old.

Accommodation is primarily provided at the hotel which is three minutes walk from the house. The house enjoys seriously awesome views of the bay and has a big terrace with a kick-arse BBQ. Our workaways have full access to the kitchen and whilst we provide basic food it is up to volunteers to prepare at least one evening meal per week. We also require our workaways to keep the kitchen tidy and clean up after themselves and just generally treat my house as if it were their own. Our workways have to be pet tolerant as we do have dogs and a cat.

Valparaiso is, and always has been, Chile's most vibrant, cosmopolitan city and as Chile's designated cultural capital there are always myriad things happening in the city. Valparaiso is rumoured to be one of the world's three most architecturally consistent cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage site so if you like to walk, marvel at whacky constructions and just generally take in the views you will have a blast here. Also Valparaiso is regarded by many as the graffiti capital of latin america so if you like street art you won't run out of murals to take photos of. There is also a great gastro scene in Valpo so there are many good restaurants to check out not to mention a great party scene which goes all night! If you like wine the city is only 30 minutes from Casablanca Valley (which together with Valparaiso was incorporated into the Great Wine Capitals network in 2014), 50 mins from Leyda and 75 mins from Aconcagua Valley so there are many wineries which can be visited from the city within a day.

Be warned that both Camila and I are insanely busy right now so you probably won't see a hell of a lot of us outside of the time you spend volunteering down at the hotel. That said we expect you to both play hard and work hard so we hope to find the time to party with you at least a bit while you're here with us!! Definitely make the most of the opportunity on your first night to pump me for information about the project as it will be far and away your best opportunity!!!
