We are set to become not only Chile's first container hotel but also the first which will be 100% wine focussed (apart from a wine bar and wine store, in the spirit of the "garagiste" wine movement there will also be a small winery in the underground parking garage set to produce around 21,000 bottles/60 barrels of wine per year). It has already been awarded a Chilean government grant for innovation and two of Chile's main national newspapers, one magazine and two TV channels have already run articles about the project. Internationally several TV channels globally have aired an Associated Press spot about the hotel. It is currently under construction in the residential Cerro Mariposas neighbourhood which is located only a short (5 min) bus ride from the better known tourist neighbourhoods of Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre. The project has been designed to incorporate as many recycled/sustainable elements as possible. Firstly the 25 containers which make up the structure of the hotel had all been decommissioned when they were acquired, panel beaten, painted and reutilised as the core element of the hotel. The rooms incorporate double glazed windows, crossed ventilation and are insulated with recycled newspaper (aka injected cellulose) in order to eliminate the need for additional heating/cooling. Also photo-voltaic panels and a system to recover and reuse grey water from the hotel are to be implemented at a future stage to further reduce the hotel's environmental impact and carbon footprint. The deranged lunatics who thought it would be a good idea to build a hotel out of containers are a kiwi winemaker (who has been living in Chile for the past 16 years) by the name of Grant together with partner Camila, a Chilean architect. The furniture and decorations for the rooms and common spaces within the hotel are all being made with recycled materiales (primarily disposable pallets rescued from the behind the winery before they could be taken to the local tip). We are currently about 1.5 months away from opening (the soft start is slated for late December/early January currently) and thus we need help with painting, finishing the interiors of the rooms together with the decorations (picture frames, pallet furniture, water glasses made from recycled wine bottles etc). We house volunteers both at our house (3 mins walk from the hotel) and at the hotel itself. Both the house and hotel enjoy insane views of the harbour and coastline to the north. We have two dogs (who love to be walked!) plus an apparently indestructible cat by the name of Rocky Balboa (we rescued him from under a pile of rubble at the construction site when he was on death's doorstep). In our spare time we enjoy BBQ'ing, loud funk and much too much wine........

Help with Eco project
Help in the house
The exact help will depend on where we're at with the project when you arrive but currently we are building furniture, boxes and picture frames out of recycled pallets in my workshop. At the hotel building site right now we are painting, landscaping and also need help with night watchman duties and the odd bit of shopping. Around the house some general help is needed (together with light dog-walking duties). Preference will be given to volunteers with experience in construction, furniture building or general wood-working and lastly if they speak at least some Spanish, We also prefer volunteers who are planning on staying for a minimum of two weeks.
Spanish and english
Accomodation is primarily provided at our house which is five minutes walk from the hotel (although as soon as the first rooms at the hotel are finished the idea is to start housing volunteers there also). The bedrooms at the house are private but the house, being your typical 1950's Valpo construction, only has one bathroom. The house has seriously awesome views of the bay and nice terrace with a kick-arse BBQ. Our workaways have full access to the kitchen and whilst we provide food you will have to cook for yourselves for the most part. We do expect the workaways to keep the kitchen tidy and do the dishes daily. Our workways have to be pet tolerant as we do have dogs and a cat.
Valparaiso is, and always has been, Chile's most vibrant, cosmopolitan city and as Chile's designated cultural capital there are always myriad things happening in the city. Valparaiso is rumoured to be one of the world's three most architecturally consistent cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage site so if you like to walk, marvel at whacky constructions and just generally take in the views you will have a blast here. Also Valparaiso is regarded by many as the graffiti capital of latin america so if you like street art you won't run out of murals to take photos of. There is also a great gastro scene in Valpo so there are many good restaurants to check out not to mention a great party scene which goes all night! If you like wine the city is only 30 minutes from Casablanca Valley (which together with Valparaiso was incorporated into the Great Wine Capitals network in 2014), 50 mins from Leyda and 75 mins from Aconcagua Valley so there are many wineries which can be visited from the city within a day.

We are seriously passionate about great architecture and in our humble opinion nothing is more beautiful than something truly original built out of containers. This is not just an opportunity to be a part of the first container apart-hotel on the American continent but we also hope it will also get you as enthused about this construction method as we are! Our workaways will have the chance to see firsthand how this project will transform an underdeveloped neighbourhood of Valparaiso with as yet no tourist infrastructure. This project will be pioneering in many ways as it not only represents the biggest habitational structure built from containers in Valparaiso but will also contain the first specialised wine store and wine bar of the port. Also we are literally designing the furniture and decorations as we go so our workaways will have the opportunity to have a direct input on the final aesthetic of the hotel and if they have good ideas as to how to recycle and reutilise any elements we can get our hands on, we'll be all ears!!! Staying with one of Chile's most awarded winemakers also has its benefits.....the winery is head winemaker for has been short-listed for Chilean winery of the year 4 out of the last 5 years at the International Wine & Spiritis Competition in London (they took the trophy in both 2013 and 2014, the first time in the history of the competition a single winery has won a regional trophy two years in a row). Thus if you like wine you will have someone to shoot the shit with and also we can get you good prices on some decent plonk thus permitting our workaways to taste some interesting juice!
