    Description

We have started working to revitalise a small farm on the Jukskei river. It has been essentially abandoned for seven years, so while there is infrastructure such as two houses, the actual farm is just veld.

We had to start with the basics, so we have electricity, but no running water yet. We have been clearing up the garden around the house, and made a start on preparing the chicken run where we intend to have a small flock of chickens that we will eventually allow to free range. There are a few other projects which we've planned, such as the establishment of a vegetable garden and a duck house, which we'd particularly like assistance with.
Our biggest problem currently, other than lack of running water, is the approximately 12 cows which range free on the farm. They like to come onto the garden and eat everything! One of the cows is particularly friendly, and insists on visiting us on the Verandah at night.
The big project is restoring a 15m tunnel, which we will use to grow out actual crop, once we have a license from the government.

We would love to have volunteers who are prepared to be part of the team, and who share in what we do, whether that's working together towards common goals, individual tasks or sharing a braai together. We aren't terribly formal about how we approach things, so we would be flexible about any time that volunteers wanted to take to explore nearby activities.

  • Help

    Help

As you would have seen in the description, we are really in the startup phase of this project.
We are looking for chilled people who want to be part of it, and willing to lend a hand where needed. This would include maintaining and cleaning the house, feeding and watering the chickens and cleaning their hen-house as immediate tasks.
As we start working on refurbishment of the first tunnel/greenhouse, we'd appreciate assistance with that.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have four rooms in the house we're staying in so one or two would be available.
There is a second house about a hundred meters away which we will be working on as well with five rooms, so depending on circumstances, that could be an option for staying.

We will be cooking food for ourselves and volunteers would be welcome to join us for those meals. If volunteers would prefer to make their own food, they would be welcome to do so. We would not expect any more than a few hours assistance a day in any case.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The Workawayer who stays with us will be made to feel part of the team, included in what we do. This sometimes includes going to town or to other places. We are totally flexible in our approach, so if they want to take two days to go to a festival or just away for a while, that can easily be accommodated.
