    Description

We are travellers that have a dream, and have built a dhow to sail and realise community projects in the coastal settlements in East Africa that we have journeyed to. We built a 70 foot traditional engineless dhow. It was hand built in Kenya with archaic techniques using locally sourced material with the support of dozens of volunteers and local craftsmen.

We are now anchored in our home of the Kilifi creek on the coast of Kenya. During the December and January period 2020-2021 we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be active within a community environment and help us in maintaining the boat with carpentry skills and also people with a passion for creativity to help us realise some events and experiences for the diverse community of Kilifi.

The dhow is a platform for the message of peace, freedom and unity; an ambitious project where people who believe in this message can be active in it’s flow. We built the boat for over eight years and are now sailing and reaching out to small coastal communities where we can exchange knowledge, skills and consciousness with the people we meet. Sharing our time and energy can only give a more clear understanding. It can change our preconception of imagined difference and bring the realisation that as humans we all carry a part of each other within us. In a world where ignorance has created separation we wish to recognise each other as a unified body and evolve perspective from all angles. A recognition which bares the fruits of peace, freedom and unity.

This is a great opportunity to experience community lifestyle, woodworking and traditional boatbuilding craftsmanship, and to explore the customs and cultures of the East African coastline and the unspoilt area around Kilifi. We have kayaks, bicycles and fishing gear for your use. We speak English, Italian, Spanish, French and Swahili.

    Help

We are looking for a crew to help out with maintenance, carpentry, co-living (i.e cleaning, cooking for community), hospitality as we sometimes host groups for sunset experiences. Being a platform for different projects, we encourage volunteers to come on board with their own ideas and dreams according to their interests and skills. We are looking to host different and new events on the boat over the Christmas and new years period which hold our philosophy of peace freedom and unity at their core.

    Accommodation

We live as a community on board, sharing the duties of cooking, cleaning, shopping and upkeep. We have sleeping compartments below deck, but weather permitting, we enjoy sleeping on deck with the cool sea breeze and the beautiful night sky. Diet on board is predominantly vegetarian but we occasionally enjoy locally caught seafood.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Kilifi has a lot to offer: paradise beach at swimming distance, exploring the huge creek with our kayaks or the surrounding land by bicycle; jump on the dinghy with us for a sunset cruise, fishing or to explore the beautiful coral heads just around us.
We invite people to go and spend time in the village drinking coffee with elders, listening to their stories and share yours. There are a few bars in town and on the beach with cold beverages.
The December and January period in Kilifi is very lively with music, art and wellness events happening every week to be part of.
Getting to Kilifi from Mombasa takes around two and half hours and from Nairobi takes between eight and ten hours by regularly running busses.
