Artisan food company, guest house, organic urban food forest farm & eco-sustainable community on secluded, natural, riverside acreage, right in the City of Kamloops. We grow herbs, edible flowers, fruit, nuts, berries, squashes, heritage, wild settler and indigenous GREENS in our food forests, greenhouse and urban farm gardens. Our focus combines culinary-tourism with ethical omnivorous whole foods, nutritional healing, wild indigenous plants, delicious flavours & easy to prepare recipes. Our first six tiny chicks have just hatched and they are a joy to watch peeping around the place.
Our Motto: Happy Healthy People on a Happy Healthy Planet is our active daily meditation.
We are now completing our May crew. We have one more single placement, first come, first serve, available now until the end of June. Our ideal summer season has 6 awesome humans in our inner circle. After the first few weeks, if it's a really good fit, we can talk about a longer stay for pursuing a summer permaculture/culinary/eco business internship, apprenticeship or farm stay partnership.
We would love to host someone who has real skills and the ability to fix and maintain appliances... exhaust fan, repair a fridge or freezer compressor, hook up and wire an electrical plug for a stove, attach gas piping to a new oven.... we will feed you better than you have ever been fed and cook and clean for you everyday!!!
Weeding, planting, cleaning, laundry, baking, cooking, fermenting, jam making, mulching, pruning, top the current agenda. Digging, composting and replanting the greenhouse will be next up.
An in depth immersion in eco-sustainable living, integrity and authenticity - experience first hand what it takes to build an urban organic permaculture food forest farm and guest house with eco artisan culinary focus. Learn ways to live gently on the earth, how to make whole food from scratch, how to better nourish your body and how to work hard in a hand made life. You will think a lot, consider your choices and love doing it. We repair, reuse, repurpose and upcycle. Our scope includes plastic free living with an emphasis on household cleaning, home, bath and body, food recovery & creative nutritional whole food cooking; cellular memory, whole being awareness and the mind body spirit connection, We grow & gather herbs for teas, medicine, body care and culinary purposes; ethnobotany, plant identification and wild-crafting are passions here.
If you are travelling from outside Canada, we invite you to stay with us as a "visitor on holiday" - we host international travellers who want to learn and participate as a fully engaged member of our household for a single one month contract through workaway. If you suspect a one month stay is too much commitment for you, please honour our community and come visit us first as a paid guest for a one week permaculture immersion through air bnb, spend a little time in our circle and make up your mind. This community is ideal for you if you want to spend your time building a tipi, tent hobbit house or treehouse, washing dishes, cleaning kitchens & bathrooms, changing beds, making organic jam, salads, or a pot of soup with bone broth, washing laundry, weaving a basket, harvesting, drying & rubbing herbs, tea blending, making music, sweeping the house, painting a wall, baking a cake, muffins or whole food cookies, jumping on the trampoline, winter camping, waking up to bird calls, snow shoveling, consciously healing, conversing in a community circle, skiing, hiking the local hills, wildcrafting herbs, rooting or grafting new trees, reading, sunbathing, swimming or exploring by bike or on foot, walking the beachfront or nature trail, connecting in a bigger circle with love.
Commune with nature on your doorstep, chat around the big farm tables, soak in the hot tub, fix or rebuild a bike, insulate a floor, clean an oven, turn the compost, share gorgeous whole food, converse about the universe and our role in it, climb a tree, ferment water kefir, pickles or wild mustard kimchi, design and build a stone walkway, weed, mow, mulch or prune in the food forest gardens, tan an organic hide, collect eggs, juice greens, lie naked in the sun, swim in the pool, make a smoothie, learn about hugelkultur, harvest mushrooms, pick fruit or wild salad greens, paddle in a canoe, play guitar or piano, learn, share or teach any of the above.
Those with beautiful handwriting are important in our jam making season for hand-labeling jars for our pantry. We would love to meet a farm & foodie enthusiast or couple to join us longer term. You love permaculture, pruning, weeding, mulching gardens, planting, setting up cold frames, splicing, grafting or rooting, unique eco building projects, cleaning and organizing, culinary adventures, documenting your work with film or photography & sharing through social media. You are passionate about urban permaculture, ethno-botany, wild edibles and food forest plantings. We love enthusiastic self starters, who are comfortable experimenting and we are happy to merge your passions and visions within our long term goals. We are looking for more self directed, enthusiastic, peaceful, playful, engaged beings to maximize how much food we can grow organically and preserve on a very small urban lot in a food forest permaculture model. We LOVE longer stays where new people can really become a part of our community and benefit from an accumulation and exchange of experience, wisdom & knowledge.
Organic farming, healing the earth, living communally and making food from scratch takes loads of time and energy. The more we each invest, the more abundant and beautiful our shared life becomes. Work and play here blend together, there are no work hours or schedules, time on or off is blurred. Lines blend between family, community, farming, learning, teaching, healing, growing, playing, loving or working. Everyone is engaged, building the life we all share, together as an open-hearted collaborative circle, not a pyramid.
This community is a group of beings growing, learning and changing together organically with a strong emphasis on personal integrity, individual investment, the power of the spoken word, mental / spiritual / emotional / physical engagement, individual self-balance and fluid equality between all parts of the circle. We are actively creating abundance together. For all beings in our collaborative, from the day you arrive this is your home, this is your circle, you are personally responsible for making this life what you want it to be, expressing your needs, caring for your self, the whole and the success of our entire collaborative venture. And you will immediately have a whole lot of open hearted beings helping you rock it. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A bird can not fly without its' wing tip feathers. We practice non violent communication, self care, and unconditional love. We embrace the beautiful, unique multi faceted diversity of each shining individual and are learning to transcend the divisions of race, culture, personality and gender identity with open-heart communication, empathy, gentleness and a whole lot of practice.
We challenge ourselves and all our visitors to honor and practice...
“The Four Agreements
1. Be impeccable with your word.
2. Don’t take anything personally.
3. Don’t make assumptions.
4. Always do your best. ”
― Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom.
Gorgeous natural, meditative environment, 10 mins from downtown, 5 mins to the airport. All major city amenities with private natural organic permaculture food forest gardens, clothing optional, copper crystal alkaline swimming pool, chlorine free mineral hot tub, trampoline, slack-line, piano, drum-kit and tons of musical instruments.
This is an active URBAN farm, led by a family of 4, with regular shifting and new people flowing in and out. We experience all the normal intensity of a big family - kids are 14, 16, 18 and 20 (Only the two youngest live at home full time) with often 2 to 12 other conscious adults, visitors and guests sharing the main house, tents, treehouse and cottage on our land. Our property is right in the city of Kamloops on a secluded riverfront half acre which feels way bigger and more wild.
We have a small dog named Bella (hypoallergenic), a lovely wandering hen named Beyonce who has successfully raised the first generation of Real Canadian Climbing Chickens, and Sophia our free range bunny.
Visitors contacting us through workaway are welcome to help in our home, kitchen and permaculture gardens. All visitors must have basic English language skills at a conversational level to apply. We are all very patient helping you master your English language to an advanced level. We speak only a little, basic beginner languages. Thaelo likes Japanese. Imogen & Colin like French. Alexandra loves Spanish.
Thaelo and Imogen would love some help from awesome tutors - highschool level math, science, calculus, or tutoring in mechanics, design, building, repair, electrical, etc.
Generally after a quiet morning of breakfast, reading, conversation, movement or meditations... we all help in the house cleaning and organizing and doing general maintenance late morning to midday. Our spiral of creation starts in the center and this focus on maintaining our shared community space helps create beautiful feng sui space to keep everything running smoothly and the energy clear and high.
The other half of our day is spent on farm & household chores & projects like cooking, baking, fixing, production, harvesting, pruning, transplanting, drying and rubbing herbs, learning new skills like basket weaving, making jams, writing labels, picking, fermenting and preserving herbs, baking, bottling kefir, building new projects, building hugelkultur gardens or essentials like turning compost, cleaning chicken house, hiking & gathering with many fruit & nut trees, berries, flowers, herbs and veggies to plant, weed, harvest, prune and dry or preserve.
Hours are often flexible and we invite community members to pick and choose tasks as they wish from our chore lists and projects board. There are no schedules, work hours, time on or off here. Each member of the community contributes as they wish, living the life of a self directed entrepreneur aiming for greatness, with a little guidance from those who have been here longer. It is essential to building our vision that each person love what they are contributing with each task; we ask ourselves, how would I like to invest and contribute today - how can I create abundance in this moment, how am I called to engage & grow? Our work is our daily active meditation and every task can be beautiful and loved in its wholeness. "Work is Love made visible" - Kahlil Gibran - The Prophet.
To build a healthy balanced community, it is also essential that each individual in our collective make time for the nourishment and self care we each need for ourselves as individuals. A clear challenge for most entrepreneurs. If you want to nourish, hydrate, sleep, hike, bike, stretch, dance, juice, rest, read, swim, jump, nap or play, you are personally responsible for scheduling these wants and needs into your own daily routine and making them an important, daily part of our shared reality. It is also a wonderful choice to lead and guide others in the parts of life where we have mastered and excel, while we follow others where we wish to learn.
General household schedule - dawn to 10 pm. Main house, pool deck and wireless internet are closed around 10 pm and everyone is encouraged to head to bed for quiet time (unless we have a movie night, hot tub party or music jam...) In the evening before dinner, we may have SCREEN FREE times when the wireless internet is turned off to encourage more real authentic human connections. If you want to leave your cel phone in your room, drawer or pocket much of the time AWESOME! - Colin & Alexandra choose to live cel phone free!
Your daily time contribution does not even begin to cover the cost of our beautiful shared life; copper crystal pool, mineral hot tub, incredibly awesome whole foods, fermenting, cooking, healing, food forest gardening, teaching and learning, maintenance and high quality supplies for all of the whole community circle. Things like natural soaps & shampoos, hand made toothpaste, laundry soap, essential oils, tools, art supplies, farm supplies, building supplies, household items, trampoline, slack line, canoe, bicycles, skateboards, library of books and musical instruments are all here. There is a donation jar on the table if you would like to contribute. Please care for these shared objects as if they were your own and choose to replace and repair them as necessary. Maintenance is the laying on of hands; touching, polishing, caring for ourselves and our objects is how we get the love into our lives.
Come work and play with us a while.
English with a tiny bit of Spanish and French.
Tent bedrooms with real beds, some with a queen size bed, some shared with two twin-size beds, all nestled under the trees in our food forest gardens. We can also make space to accommodate your RV / Van / Bus. All community members share bathrooms, kitchen, den, living rooms and fully stocked whole food kitchen in the main house, living together as a family. Copper Crystal Swimming Pool (summer), sun deck & chlorine-free hot tub (year-round) is a huge community chill space and is clothing optional. Everyone here is comfortable with natural nudity.
In spring/summer months, March-September, temperatures generally range from 0 to +40 celsius. There is a swimming pool here to keep you cool and big shady trees over the tent bedrooms. Temperatures at night in the desert summer, go way down so sleeping the tents is very comfortable and airy. Listening to the birds above you in the trees is amazing!
In winter months, October-February temperatures generally range from +10 to -10 celsius, going down to -20 C on the coldest of days. We have had all our tent bedroom spaces filled for four winter seasons now, and most have been comfortable and content with the arrangement, but please consider this is still winter camping, but with a real warm & cozy bed. We provide winter sleeping bags, blankets and hot water bottles which keep everyone cozy in bed and a warm house to wake up to, but please come prepared with warm hats, scarves, winter clothing and jammies...
You are welcome to upgrade to a main house bedroom, tipi, treehouse or b&b room if you wish. Just ask us about a discount on other guest room options if a tent bedroom is not your thing...
We share healthy, often organic, whole food groceries, omnivorous flexitarian community farm table meals, mornings & evenings. Weston A Price, Paleo, Fermented Living and Raw Foods focuses influence our nutritional style here - but we love ALL food and share it abundantly. We eat loads of RAW food - fruit anytime, with a focus on salad for lunch and dinner aiming for 5-20 servings of fresh garden greens, herbs, fruit and veggies daily. Our meals incorporate wild/free range/organic meats & fish as often as we can source and afford them, but we are not always organic. Homemade soups, rice or beans simmered with re-mineralizing organic bone broths. Oven roasted meats with veggies & potatoes, grilled meats & fish, cheesy pastas, Farm fresh eggs, wheat-free muffins, some grass fed organic dairy, sprouted grain and artisan or sourdough breads. Juicer, Vitamix, we encourage lots of wild green smoothies, fresh herbal teas, naturally fermented water kefir, fruit waters and local, organic, hand roasted coffee. Fruit, nuts, seeds, berries. Very little packaged food lives here - most of our pantry is things we make ourselves. We buy the very best groceries we as a community can afford. There is a donation jar on our table and we ask each member of the community to contribute generously so we can choose to invest in even more conscious healthy food choices, together. Hang out in the kitchen and learn about whole food cooking as we make dinner together, something deliciously gourmet and nourishing.
We are not interested in hosting those who want to do their own separate thing in the kitchen, with lots of allergies or those who are attached to a particular eating style with strong food preferences, but prefer to teach people who are open and willing to learn about nutritional healing with whole foods and share meals together as a community. For us, the love of slow food, gourmet flavours and sharing a meal are equally important to the quality of ingredients. We embrace moderation, variation and diversity - not clinging to stagnant beliefs. In a desert grassland ecosystem like Kamloops, incorporating organic dairy, grass fed herd animals, fish and wild game IS the most healthy sustainable food choice for our bodies and our planet. We Choose Local, Buy Local, Eat Local as often as we can. All members of our collaborative have already made a personal choice to invest more time, energy and financial flow into our earth by buying local and organic, reusing, repairing, farming, growing, collecting, hand-making, even though it is rarely profitable or time effective to do so. This is an individual life choice.
Throughout the growing season we harvest a lot of fruit from our own trees and we glean from local unsprayed trees, orchards, wildcrafted fruits, berries, flavourings and herbs and set about preserving this local organically grown abundance and transform it into new delicious and healthy fermentations, sauces, jams, chutneys, syrups, chocolates, teas, preserves, muffins and whatever else tickles our fancy to feed our community with the sacred harvest our earth provides! We also volunteer for our local food share and gleaning abundance projects to save food that would otherwise go to waste in landfills.
Canoeing, swimming, trampolining, biking, hiking, skiing, skateboarding, ice skating and more on or nearby property. Everyone helps prep & cleans up after our big farm table dinners most evenings and breakfasts in the mid morning. We are peaceful, playful, actively engaged beings, passionate about life, enthusiastic learners and teachers with diverse skills and knowledge to offer and share. Everyone here is self directed; you must ask for what you want.
Entirely cigarette-free environment. Please do not come here if you smoke. We choose to keep deodorants, perfumes, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, birth control hormones, plastics and synthetic fragrances in body wash/shampoo/bodycare/make up etc. and cleaners to a minimum but real natural essential oils and natural bodycare products, homemade or from the health food store are welcome.
Private Pool Deck and back gardens are clothing optional - everyone is comfortable with natural nudity.
