    Description

Hi... We are a totally non profit based project dedicated to the welfare, conservation and education of and about the critically endangered Skyrian pony situated on the beautiful island of Skyros.

WE are looking for one more volunteer who is experienced with ponies/ horses to join our volunteer team in late June through July, August and September⬇️⬇️⬇️

This volunteer needs to have groundskill/ in hand experience and really be a pony /horse person who is excited by new approaches to equine training through utilizing positive reinforcement/ clicker training/ natural/ thoughtful horsemanship approaches.

We hope to be exploring driving (in alternative vehicles to a carriage) and a liberty work project … If you can commit to an extended stay, from the end of June through to the middle of September and you love the idea of exploring the concept of a " pony play laboratory " then please do contact us.

You will be playing /working with a herd of charismatic, big charactered, sweet natured, highly intelligent, critically endangered ponies known as the Skyrian small horse ( as well as assorted other animals!!)

We take care of 34 critically endangered Skyrian ponies and 2 larger ponies( 10 of whom are rescues) 10 cats ( all feral rescues) , 3 dogs ( 2 rescues) , 1 goat and quite a few chickens.

We are looking for volunteers who are positive, flexible, able to problem solve, dedicated, mature, enjoy outside physical work and preferably have experience with horses or ponies or an interest in them and are happy with the basic pleasures of life... We love hosting volunteers who are interested in a long term volunteering.

Our project started in 2006 and since 2009, we have enjoyed hosting over 200 volunteers , not just from Workaway but also independent travellers and other volunteer sites, a lot of our volunteers return yearly.

We are based on a small farm in a beautiful area which is near the sea and pine forest, on a traditional Greek island.

If you want to be part of a genuine project, and help us care for our herd , then please do get in touch and we will send you detailed information about our project and a volunteer application form.
We really look forward to hearing from you.

Most of the work is centered around our herd of friendly Skyrian ponies , pooh picking their fields, feeding, watering, yard work , moving hay, handling the ponies, mending fences etc . Depending on the time of the year also supporting a variety of horsemanship projects.
For volunteers with real experience with ponies there are opportunities to get involved with equine agility, positive reinforcement approach to training, ground skills, liberty work, lungeing, long reining, driving the ponies, if you are small and experienced enough to ride our ponies there is also that as an opportunity .

    What else ...

Skyros island is still very traditional, with an unspoilt wild beauty whilst also being very safe as everyone knows everyone. The farm is in a traditional farming area close to the beach and pine forest. There is a taverna in easy walking distance , and a wonderful ancient archaeological site next to the sea in 10 mins walking distance.
The main village ( 16km away from our farm), is vibrant and very beautiful and traditionally Greek and has good access to internet, two museums and many good cafes and bars. There is limited public transport and if you want to explore the island especially off season the best way is walking , borrowing a bike , hitching or hiring a moped or car. We will also gives you lifts when we are going into the village etc.
