Description
My husband, musical interpreter (musical awakening) and myself, digital librarian multimedia library, live in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, in the hamlet of Favières. Be careful, we are near Paris (45 minutes by train) but that costs 20 euros to go. We are the parents of 3 children including a 10-years-old girl, Leina, with a rare genetic disease: Rett syndrome.
We want to find volunteers to play with her and help us with the daily works.
We created an association and set up an eco-housing structure with events organization (musical animations, show, training, workshops ...). Join us and discover the Ile-de-France!
We are less than an hour from Paris and Reims, 20 minutes from Disneyland Paris. We have a large garden and a station about 15 minutes by foot (5 minutes by car). We have two rooms.

Mon mari, intervenant musical (éveil musical) et moi-même, bibliothécaire numérique, vivons à la Ferté-sous-Jouarre, dans le Hameau de Favières. Nous tenons à préciser que nous sommes à moins d'une heure de Paris, mais c'est la campagne et cela coûte 20 euros pour y aller. Nous sommes les parents de 3 enfants dont une petite fille de 10 ans, Leina, atteinte d'une maladie génétique rare : le syndrome de Rett.
Nous souhaitons trouver des volontaires pour jouer avec elle et nous aider avec le quotidien.
Nous avons créé une association et mettons en place une structure d'accueil de type éco-habitation avec organisation d'événements (animations musicales, spectacle, formations, ateliers...).

Nous sommes à moins d'une heure de Paris et de Reims, à 20 minutes de Disneyland Paris. Nous avons un grand jardin et les transports à environ 15 minutes à pieds (5 minutes en voiture). Nous avons deux lits de disponibles dont un qui peut accueillir un couple.

We need help mainly to stimulate by play our 10 years old daughter with autistic disorders and her brothers (6 and 11 yo) on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We also need help for setting up our associative projects and works from home and for driving to différents medical or associatives meetings. We are flexibles but we need help for cooking and cleaning.

Leina really is one of the kindest and loveliest kids I ever got to work with! I stayed in your family for about a month and it was my first stay in France ever. The family together was lovely, I was treated like an extension of the family and the first thing I was told was "to feel at home". That included eating whatever I wanted, telling… read more Sandrine if I wanted her to buy some groceries for me and moving around the house like I pleased. Daniel helped me to plan trips on my free days (which I had quite a lot of, I think it were around 7 full days) as he is not only a talented musician but also interested in art, so he could recommend some museums to me and even planned out a train route to the village Van Gogh died. I got to borrow his books about art and in the evening one could often witness his soft guitar tunes and skills. Especially when a second workawayer from Argentina (greetings to you, Hernan) who was also blessed with guitar skills, joined us, we often spent the nights jammin together over a French beer, wine or cider. Unfortunately for her, Sandrine often had to work long hours and therefor couldn't spend as much time with her kids as she would probably like to. But when she was home, you could really feel the unconditional love she had for her three kids, even though one isn't living with them at the moment but with his father. But even after an exhausting workday, Sandrine would almost always find the time to have dinner together with her kids and Daniel as well. When I had troubles sleeping I felt comfortable talking with her about mental health and she gave me essential oils and little plants based helpers, that was really nice. You were 100% seen as a part of the family and I was asked to join every event if I wanted. In exchange I never had to work more than the 4-5 hours a day, rather less. (on average, sometimes I had to watch the kids 8-9 hours a day but some days only 2-3 hours or less and then there was at least one entirely free day a week, so that's totally fine) And the work mostly consisted of making food, keeping the kitchen and the living room clean and playing some games with Ernan, the youngest boy and putting on a new episode of peppa pig for Leina. Sometimes I had to change Leina's diaper and sometimes that's not that much of an easy thing to do with a 6 year old but once you realize she can't do it herself, it's really no problem and you want to help her with it. About Lena's RETT syndrome; Sandrine sat down with me one day during the first week and explained the illness a bit further to me and also explained the 'son rise method', which is a method that is usually used to treat kids with autism but also worked good to reduce Leina's pain and broaden her communication skills but it's very understandable and there's good videos on YouTube about it. For transportation, that you live so close to Paris, only forty minutes by train really is a big pro, even tho for the walk to the train station you'll have to add half an hour there and forty minutes back, as the house lies on top of quite a steep hill. But generally, that's not much of a problem and with a lot of free days, Paris and its surroundings are just soooo beautifully to discover. A daily ticket costs 17,80€, but it's there and back and you can use the metro and busses to go around Paris. We could also sometimes use the car in the evening, to go to Meaux, where you can find a beautiful place at the Marne to go take a bath and it's free as well! But you could also go to Meaux by bus for like 2€, which me and my fellow workawayer did when we had half a day off, and have a look at the beautiful cathedral. Sandrine and Daniel also didn't hesitate to play our tour guide and always recommended places to go when we asked them. About food; I'm a vegan and had barely any troubles making tasty food, as it was mostly my duty to make food for the family and Leina eats a 90% vegan diet anyways. And there's a lot of nice vegan places in Paris to get a croissant as well! Generally, Sandrine included me into the organization of events from her association, which was very interesting. When there were hours in the day, when the kids where in school and the parents at work and I didn't have to prepare any lunch, then I'd spend a lot of my hours in the garden, enjoying the beautiful September sun (it was 20-30° almost the whole time, except for the last week, where it started to rain) and read a nice book. Sometimes I was asked to help with the laundry or help with the physiotherapy. I also can't leave out the nice grandpa, that didn't speak that much English, but as my French was real poor, he tried to encourage me to speak French and thought me words by using his hands to describe them - so lovely! All in all, I loved the French feeling of living and felt incredibly welcomed in this home and I am looking forward to visiting them again, if I'll ever be in this part of France again - a little second family!

I had the opportunity to stay with the family in December 2017. This was my first Workaway experience so I was a little nervous and unsure what to expect.

It was a big change for me to stay in a house with so many people (several other Workaway volunteers, Sandrine, Daniel and the kids) since I haven't lived with my family for many years. I… read more came to enjoy the communal living, sharing cooking, childcare, washing and other daily activities. It was wonderful to see how much Sandrine and Daniel love their children and how they do their utmost to ensure they have happy, active, healthy lives. I appreciated being part of a group of Workawayers - I think if I had been alone I would have felt quite overwhelmed with all the activity!

It took me a while to settle in, especially since I wasn't used to adhering to a routine involving children, but I soon grew comfortable. Similarly, I initially wasn't sure what Leina needed because she has difficulty communicating but Sandrine really went out of her way to help me understand Rett Syndrome and the forms of therapy they use for Leina. She is really open to new research on the topic and fosters a culture of learning in the home.

The family mostly needs help with general household tasks, and a presence for the children. Leina needs at least 10 hours of play therapy (Son Rise Program) per week, most of which takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Although it was sometimes difficult to anticipate when I was needed, Sandrine and Daniel do prepare a weekly schedule which dictates who is responsible for which activity on which day. They are flexible on this, and just ask that you give them notice if things need to be changed around!

If you love children, you will enjoy staying with this family. Their home is always abuzz with laughter, games, (sometimes!) tantrums and love. It is initially not easy to get the children to warm to you, but trust that it will eventually happen. I'd highly recommend staying for a month or more, for this reason.

Sandrine and Daniel are bags of fun in their own way: Sandrine is warm and humorous, and Daniel has a quieter presence but really a big heart and a wicked sense of humor. I grew close to them during my month in France and I was tearful when it was time for me to leave. I already miss the family, the beautiful town where they live and the divine French food I was fed. Thank you to Sandrine and Daniel for having me! I do so appreciate the experience I had, and I hope I was helpful in your home.

I really enjoyed the flexibility of the work we could do here. While I was here I did photography/video… read more editing since that was what I cared about, someone else painted the Kitchen, another volunteer was a great organizer and did "an extreme home makeover" for two rooms and the more musically-inclined of us helped Daniel with his music projects and sang to the kids. You can chase the work you love here.

Along with your pet projects, you help cook, look after the kids, do Sunrise program with Leina and help with spontaneous things that pop up (like driving someone somewhere or helping make an informational poster). I enjoyed cooking (I'm so much more cook-confident now!) and looking after the kids since I never done home childcare before. If you don't know French, language can be a barrier but google translate and the general willingness to be a complete goofball helps.

The meat and potatoes of your work here, helping with Leina, will really shake you up in the best possible way. With Leina you help feed her, massage her, walk with her and do the sunrise learning program with her. I learned so much about Rett Syndrome, working with children with disabilities and connecting with people from Leina. She challenges you to be the best possible version of yourself and heals your soul with her smile. Just watch your face when you're holding her, she likes to shove her hand in people's faces. XD

Overall, you really gain a lot of great work and life experience here.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD?
Sandrine's and Daniel's home is cozy and lovely. It really is quite huge. It's very easy to find your own private sleeping space in this house even if there are 11 people at the house at once! Just know that your room may possibly be multi-purpose. Like my room was the laundry room in the day time, someone else's room was Leina's sunrise room, etc. The food was great here. Food is covered here and you get to try some really great dishes from around the world. If you have any dietary restrictions or food preferences, just let Sandrine and Daniel know and they got your back. They also like to surprise you with some really amazing food sometimes like crepes, homemade bread, raclette and well I don't want to spoil all the surprises!

FREE TIME & SURROUNDING AREA?
I think the main struggle many workawayers have here is the unpredictable work schedule. Like many childcare situations, it's irregular. There are no designated days you have completely free. There are times where something pops up and you may have to give an unexpected car ride to someone, watch the kids by yourself for 30 minutes or cook a meal randomly because everyone else is super busy and well, someone gotta put food on the table. Over time Sandrine and Daniel have been trying to improve the last minute communication with a white board schedule system where people claim/are assigned tasks but still expect surprises. There is plenty of free time (like when the kids are at school or potentially between meals). Just know the busiest days are Wednesday and Saturday when the kids are at home and around meal time (when help is needed with feeding Leina, cooking, putting up dishes, etc). If you need specific time off for self-care/trips out, just communicate what you need, Sandrine and Daniel will listen.

The surrounding area is idyllic. You can walk around surrounding fields, charming neighborhood streets and there is a nice river in town. I highly recommend walking around at night, the stars around these parts are magical. If you want hustle and bustle, you can borrow a family car for an outing or Paris is 1-2 hours away by train depending on where you want to get to.

PEOPLE YOU SERVE?
I love this family so gosh darn much. Sandrine is lively, delightfully curious and is always concerned about her workawayers mental and physical health (She asked me many times in my stay if I was having a good time). Daniel is mellow and always bubbling with witty humor. The children are full of energy, goofiness and are a joy to play with.

NOTE: All of them are still in the "communication via TANTRUM & SCREAMING & REJECTING WHAT YOU SAY" stage. You may be woken up/shaken up randomly by both joyous and angry shouting. It's good character-building and patience-building, but a pair of ear plugs isn't a bad idea. Leina especially has a healthy pair of screaming lungs (with the Rett Syndrome, it's her main form of communication) and there are moments where you are truly stressed because she is stressed and you're not sure how to help her. But then the sun comes out and she suddenly becomes very quiet and she laughs and claps her hands together. She smiles, you smile back and in the back of your heart you get the feeling that some great monk on a far off planet has gained enlightenment or a new nebula was just created in the swarming chaos of the universe.
