  • Description

Hi! My name is Sylvie and I am a recent graduate of University of California, Berkeley in sociology. Though I'm originally from Los Angeles, I have lived most of my adult life in the Bay Area (and much of that time living in cooperative student housing) and have spent the last year living in Madrid, working as an English language assistant. I am currently rebuilding my fluency in Spanish and am eager to pick up more languages :)

I am hoping to travel through Europe this summer (though preferably staying in places on a more long-term basis than a couple of days), which is part of what brings me to Workaway. I am an extroverted, inquisitive, creative, and spontaneous person, who enjoys cooking, reading, exploring new cities (preferably walking), rock climbing, and much more! I have had previous, only positive experience with Workaway before and I am gravitated towards experiences that lend me toward meeting people I would never otherwise meet, discovering new parts of the world, and learning/developing new skills.

More details about my language interests
I love to learn languages! I am obviously very good at English and have spent the last year really building up my Spanish again and am happy to teach what I know. I am very excited by language and by words and am always happy to learn more (and think that I'm pretty quick to pick them up too) :)

  • More details about your skills

I have previously worked with two Workaway hosts. As my first workaway experience, I spent 3 weeks with a family near Rome, Italy, helping them to care for their two children (ages 3 and 5); I helped to entertain the children while their parents were working, as well as preparing vegetarian lunches and dinners for the family. At my second workaway experience, I spent a month volunteering for a free festival in Frankfurt, Germany, where I assisted with a variety of tasks including setting up and building down the festival (very physical, manual labor such as building stages and tents, moving furniture across cobblestones, etc.), dishwashing, food preparation for the 200+ volunteers, deep cleaning bathrooms and shared living spaces, etc.

I am a very adept vegetarian cook and have experience head cooking for groups up to 40 people. I lived for 3 years in the Berkeley Student Cooperatives, where I contributed to household chores through cooking dinner once every week for my housemates. Through this experience, I have learned how to think on my feet, often not knowing what I was going to cook until the day of (and working with whatever ingredients available to me). As part of this experience, I am very accustomed to living in communal spaces and am invested in the work of caring for other people, including the unappealing tasks of such work (I.e. cleaning bathrooms, taking out trash, deep cleaning industrial kitchens, etc.)

I have significant experience with childcare and I love working with children! Currently, I am an assistant English teacher in a Spanish preschool, working with kids between the ages of 3-5. I also have a fair amount of experience with working with kids one-on-one such as in tutoring sessions or as working as a tennis coach and camp counselor. I believe in the importance of meeting kids where they are, particularly when it comes to silliness and earnestness.

I am very hard-working and a quick learner, so I am eager to handle any task that may come up — part of what I love about Workaway is learning new skills and discovering more about what I like to do. I am very eager to learn more about carpetry, woodwork, and gardening!
