  • Description

Hello, we are Joel and Mya. :) We met in January 2025 doing a Workaway on a small farm, becoming instantly great friends and have since explored 5+ countries together!

Hello ! I'm Mya. I started my Workaway journey in January 2025, where I met Joel on the beautiful farm in Makaha Valley, Hawaii. I'm originally from San Diego, California, so I've grown up loving both the sunny beach days and the more inland work on horse ranches. I am looking primarily for work in hospitality, as I now have experienced working in a hotel on the Greek island of Andros as well as falling in love with the environments hostels create. One of my main goals is to meet and interact with people from all kinds of backgrounds- and see places unlike anything I'm familiar with. Throughout my life I've worked on many ranches, so I'm not a stranger to maintenance, hands-on work. Those years also have given me a lot of experience with animals, primarily horses and dogs. My WorkAway experiences include a few farms, very similar to the work I had previously been exposed to, but I also was able to branch out into a love for hospitality work, making people from all over the world feel happy and comfortable in the beautiful place we shared.

Hello! :) I'm Joel. My first Workaway was in Italy, where I got to experience the lifestyle of working at a peaceful quiet hostel on a beautiful mountain next to Lake Como, where I primarily cleaned, assisted guests, helped prepare for events, worked front desk, and learned the lifestyle of a slower and isolated life I was not used to, which I deeply appreciated. I then later met Mya at the farm in Hawaii where I got to care for the crops, helped with general maintenance, and learned a lot about working with horses, which I found to love. Both being out of my comfort zone, my passion grows for seeking unfamiliar lifestyles and learning new ways of living. I bonded deeply with the horses in Hawaii and hope to be able to continue to learn to work with horses and create more deep bonds with other horses and animals. While backpacking through Vietnam with Mya, we got to meet other travelers from all over the world with different stories than mine, and I am very excited to meet and indulge with even more unlike those I have met. I love working with people, while also very independent, and am very optimistic about helping around wherever is needed. I'm looking forward to whatever opportunity and adventures comes my way and to making new friends.

More details about my language interests
Mya- Being born in the US and raised in San Diego, I have grown up around a lot of Spanish speaking people and have a very basic understanding of the language. I practiced learning Portuguese inconsistently for a time, and am still very interested in learning it. Joel - My dad is fully Swedish and my mom was raised in Spain, but sadly lost my ability to speak both languages due to moving to the US at such a young age. I would love to regain the knowledge and get into practice to learn either of these languages.
