  • Description

Hello, we are Joel and Mya. :) We met in January doing a Workaway on a small farm where we got to take care of a variety of plants and animals, including dogs, horses, ducks, home grown gardens, and more. Through this opportunity, we learned to care greatly for the sacred bond between the poeple and the land in Oahu, Hawaii. After that experience, where we became great friends immediately, we had the wonderful opportunity to continue our travels together, working on a sailboat docked in Honolulu for a month and a half getting to experience a new lifestyle on the island. After apartment hunting within Honolulu for a while, we decided our interests lied more in gaining more travel experience before deciding to reside somewhere more permanently, deciding to backpack through Vietnam for a month and a half! We are now in Joel's hometown in North Carolina, and looking for a Workaway in Europe after we spend a few weeks backpacking through the different countries and experiencing the mass variety of cultures Europe has to offer. We are both very passionate about immersing ourselves in cultures different than ours and excited to form connections with animals and people alike!

Hello ! I'm Mya. I started my Workaway journey earlier this year in January, where I met Joel on the beautiful farm in Makaha Valley. I am looking primarily for work involving animals, particularly work with horses and dogs, as I have many years of experience working on horse ranches back in my home town of San Diego, California. One of my main goals is to meet and interact with people from all kinds of backgrounds- and see places unlike anything I'm familiar with. My travels so far have been through Viet Nam and Aside from working with animals, I am very interested in helping out in hostel-type businesses due to how many people from all over the world I would get to meet and get to learn about different life experiences from.

Hello! :) I'm Joel. My first Workaway was in Italy, where I got to experience the lifestyle of working at a peaceful quiet hostel on a beautiful mountain next to Lake Como, where I primarily cleaned, assisted guests, helped prepare for events, worked front desk, and learned the lifestyle of a slower and isolated life I was not used to, which I deeply appreciated. I then later met Mya at the farm in Hawaii where I got to care for the crops, helped with general maintenance, and learned a lot about working with horses, which I found to love. Both being out of my comfort zone, my passion grows for seeking unfamiliar lifestyles and learning new ways of living. I bonded deeply with the horses in Hawaii and hope to be able to continue to learn to work with horses and create more deep bonds with other horses and animals. While backpacking through Vietnam with Mya, we got to meet other travelers from all over the world with different stories than mine, and I am very excited to meet and indulge with even more unlike those I have met. I love working with people, while also very independent, and am very optimistic about helping around wherever is needed. I'm looking forward to whatever opportunity and adventures comes my way and to making new friends.

More details about my language interests
Joel - My dad is fully Swedish and my mom was raised in Spain, but sadly lost my ability to speak both languages due to moving to the US at such a young age. I would love to regain the knowledge and get into practice to learn either of these languages. Mya- Being born in the US and raised in San Diego, I have grown up around a lot of Spanish speaking people and have a very basic understanding of the language. I practiced learning Portuguese for about 3 months, and still only retain the beginnings of that language too. I would love to become bilingual and any time I have tried to pick up a language I find it fascinating not only because of the difference with the words themselves but also for the culture surrounding the language and how it so heavily is influenced by the communities that have shaped it.
