Description
We are Magdalena and Adrian, a couple from the Sauerland region in Germany. We both study artificial intelligence and currently write our master's thesis in this field. Meanwile we would like to explore something new, learn about self sufficiency and independency. We are interested in gardening, building our own furniture and other handicrafts. In our freetime we love to go for hikes, do photography and enjoy nature in multiple ways.

We like to do a lot of DIY work:

Woodwork - We built part of our furniture by ourselves like shelves, cupboards, desks and a beautiful round dining table. We also started with wood carving last year.

Metalwork - Forging and welding. Adrian is a hobby smith and crafted some tools like hammers and knives.

Arts - We both like to draw, do some aquarelle or calligraphy. Nature photography is also a major hobby of us.

Baking - Magdalena likes to bake sourdough bread, croissants and cakes.

We had a wonderful stay here. The host family, which is Ylva, Siri and Johan, are very welcoming and open-minded. During our stay, we lived in a small, lovely cabin on the property, which we had entirely to ourselves.

When we arrived, the family showed us around and gave us an overview of where and how they live.

Our days were typically… read more structured around four shared meals. The first was just tea and coffe at 8 a.m., where we planned the day together. At 10 a.m., we had breakfast. At 2 p.m., we had lunch, where Siri always provided us with warm and especially tasty food. We were given a wonderful variety of typical Swedish food, which we loved. At 6 p.m., we had dinner, which mostly consisted of crispbread and cheese. They always made sure to respect our personal preferences when it came to food and timing.

As for the work, we were happy to help clean the windows of the greenhouse and prepare it for summer. We also helped tidy up dead branches around the property and sort stored lumber for upcoming projects. We also spend half a day digging a trench for a future fence for the chickens. And yes, there are chickens, goats and cats.

When giving us work instructions, Ylva made sure that we work at our own pace and take breaks whenever needed. We were always asked if we felt comfortable with our tasks, and we never had the impression that a "no" wouldn't be accepted. All in all, we were very happy with the type of work we were able to contribute.

We spent our free time exploring the area. Ylva had maps prepared with suggestions for shorter hikes. We visited a small lake nearby, hidden in the forest. We especially enjoyed the natural quiet of nature around the property. The family was always open to discussing how we wanted to divide our time for work and for ourselves.

During our stay, Ylva also shared a lot of knowledge about permaculture and soil. We learned a lot. Beyond that, we also learned about living a more resilient lifestyle, including both the benefits and challenges of living so remotely (for Swedish standards, it may not be that remote but come on, the nearest neighbour is 1.6 km away!).

All in all, we look back on a wonderful stay from which we gained a lot of knowledge and experience. We had many inspiring talks around the kitchen table and would like to thank them once again for welcoming us, not just as guests, but as a part of their family.
