Description
Hello, my name is Katerina and I’m currently taking a gap year. I'm taking the chance to learn something other than academics and see a bit more of the world.

I’m a curious and creative person who is always interested in learning new things, like recently I have just started learning Spanish guitar. In my free time I sculpt, write creatively and play piano. I’m easy-going, love good music and long conversations.

I’m very comfortable with hardwork and don’t mind early mornings, physical or repetitive tasks. I’m not fussy about accomodation and I take pride in doing a job well.

Some of the best weeks of my life were spent recently trekking through the Himalayas. However, one thing I missed was being able to linger in one place a little longer, get to know the people there and feel I am making a contribution. I think volunteering is a great way to bring something of value.

Hey, my name is Lucy, I'm also currently doing a gap year and would love to broaden my experience in life with getting to know different cultures and places.

A bit about me: I'm half Czech and half English, but I was born and raised in sunny Andalucía (Spain). Therefore I'm fluent in all three languages and I'm learning French and have an interest in Portuguese.
Im very easy-going and a quick learner. I try to have a positive approach to life and transmit good energy. I'm also a major animal lover and a social individual.

My main interests in life are nature, art and food, I love learning about new topics and different art techniques. And I also am more than happy to share my traditions and experiences, I feel most fulfilled when I can productively contribute to the places I visit, which makes volunteering the ideal way to travel.

I did Spanish at school and spent 2 weeks learning it in Valencia. I'm really keen to finally get to a good level. I know a lot of words but need some more practise in listening and speaking.

I've spent a year and a half as a waitress making me very comfortable in people facing jobs. I also spent time as a Chalet host, cooking and cleaning professionally.

I have a soft spot for animals, having grown up with them and have also spent 11 years riding and caring for horses in various riding schools. I'm physically fit and happy to try lots of different things.

Acabamos de dejar Amarillo después de pasar 9 días maravillosos rodeados de naturaleza y disfrutando de la compañía de Bruno. Fue nuestra primera experiencia de voluntariado y no podríamos haber estado más contentos con cómo salió todo. A nuestra llegada, nos recibieron con mucha calidez en medio de los preparativos para la próxima producción… read more teatral de Amarillo, y el lugar estaba lleno de energía e ideas. Al día siguiente pudimos ver los frutos de su trabajo en una encantadora velada informal con pizza recién salida del horno y un pequeño grupo de amigos de Bruno de la zona. Nos recibieron con los brazos abiertos y durante la semana pudimos disfrutar de un asado con ellos y mucho más. Nos dieron los primeros días para familiarizarnos con la zona y sentirnos como en casa antes de empezar a trabajar. Mientras estuvimos allí, convertimos su horno de pizza en una bola de discoteca gigante, él limpió un poco su jardín y también hizo una limpieza general. La mayoría de los días comenzaban con mate junto al río y una idílica visita a la tienda con Nimpha para comprar provisiones para el desayuno. Podíamos empezar a trabajar cuando quisiéramos y Bruno estaba muy abierto a nuestras ideas sobre lo que queríamos hacer. No estuvimos sobrecargados de trabajo y, sinceramente, disfruté mucho escuchando podcasts en esos momentos.

Por otro lado, la experiencia fue una gran oportunidad para practicar mi español. Bruno habla muy despacio y con claridad, y fue muy paciente conmigo mientras intentaba formar frases coherentes. Algunos de sus amigos hablaban inglés, lo que me permitió descansar, y Bruno también habla algo de inglés. Tuve la suerte de contar con mi amigo como traductor, pero habría sido perfectamente posible sin su ayuda.

Catamarca es un país precioso con muchas opciones para hacer senderismo, lagos extensos y pueblos tranquilos. Durante nuestra estancia, hicimos dos excursiones con Bruno, y él también tuvo la amabilidad de llevarnos al lago para pasar una tarde remando en canoa y tomando mate. El último día nos llevó a la ciudad de Catamarca (aproximadamente una hora en autobús o en Uber, que cuesta alrededor de 17.000 pesos después del último autobús a las 9) para ver una obra de teatro en las Malvinas, donde él había colaborado en el diseño de la escenografía. Bruno es prácticamente una celebridad en la zona, y después fuimos a tomar unas cervezas con el otro voluntario que estaba allí. Fue una noche maravillosa y nos dio mucha pena despedirnos de él y de su casa (y de sus animales). Si tienen la oportunidad, reserven su voluntariado en Amarillo, ¡no se arrepentirán!

We have just left Amarillo after spending 9 wonderful days surrounded by nature and enjoying Bruno’s company. It was our first workaway and we couldn’t have been more happy with how it went. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed in the midst of preparation for Amarillo’s next theatre production and the place was full of energy and ideas. The next day we were able to see the fruits of their efforts in a lovely informal evening with pizza from the pizza oven and a small crowd of Bruno’s friends from the area. They were immediately welcoming and during the week we were able to enjoy an Asado with them and more. We were given the first few days to just get to know the area a bit and make ourselves at home before we started doing some work. Whilst we were there we turned his pizza oven into a giant disco ball, did some clearing in his garden and a bit of cleaning. Most days started with mate by the river and an idyllic trip to the shop with Nimpha to buy breakfast supplies. We were able to start work when we liked and Bruno was very open to ideas for what we wanted to do. We were not at all overworked and I honestly really enjoyed tuning into a podcast for those times.

On another note the experience was a great oppurtinity for me to practise my Spanish, Bruno speaks very slowly and clearly and was very patient with me as I attempted to make coherent sentences. A few of his friends spoke English which allowed me a break and Bruno also speaks some English. I am lucky enough to have my friend as a translator but it would have been totally doable without this help.

Catamarca itself is beautiful country with plenty of hiking options available, expansive lakes and quiet villages. Whilst we there we went on 2 hikes with Bruno and he was also kind enough to take us to the lake for an afternoon of canoeing and more mate. On the final day he took us to the city of Catamarca (about an hour by bus or Ubers are around 17,000 pesos after final bus at 9) to see a theatre play on the Malvinas where he had helped with the stage design. Bruno is basically a celebrity in the area and after we went for beers with the other volunteer there at the time. It was a wonderful night and we were very sad to say goodbye to him and his place (and his animals). If you have the chance, book your workaway at Amarillo, you won’t regret it!

Recibir a Nina y Luci fue realmente muy bueno. Conectamos muy bien con su energía. Bien dispuestas a realizar tareas. Cordialidad y buenos modales en todo. Practicamos idiomas. Vimos teatro y colaboraron en la puesta en escena de otra obra de teatro aquí mismo en amarillo. Vamos a extrañarles y espero volver a verles !
