Description
Hi! I’m Alex, a Canadian yoga teacher, meditation instructor, licensed psychotherapist, and longtime fitness enthusiast currently traveling in Asia after completing eight months of intensive residential Zen Buddhist monastery training in Japan and Germany.
I’m especially interested in Workaway opportunities where I can contribute through yoga, meditation, fitness, wellness, or community-based work. I have completed 500 hours of yoga teacher training and am trained to teach Hatha, Vinyasa, and Yin yoga. I’m comfortable teaching a range of levels and enjoy creating classes that are playful, accessible, and grounded.
I’m also a certified mindfulness meditation instructor with extensive personal meditation experience, including my recent eight months living and practicing full-time in Zen monasteries. I love introducing meditation in a practical and approachable way, whether through guided meditation, mindfulness practices, or integrating meditation into yoga and wellness programs.
Fitness and movement have also been a major part of my life for many years, and I’m comfortable facilitating fitness and movement classes for different ages, fitness levels, and abilities.
Professionally, I’m a licensed psychotherapist with experience facilitating groups, retreats, and wellness programs. I particularly enjoy leading mental health and wellness workshops and creating spaces where people can explore topics such as mindfulness, emotional wellbeing, stress management, self-awareness, embodiment, and personal growth. I’d be very happy to bring this background to a retreat center, yoga studio, hostel, community, or wellness-focused project.
I’m also very willing to contribute outside of teaching! I genuinely enjoy working with my hands and being outdoors. Physical work is something I find incredibly satisfying. I’m strong, hardworking, and have experience with farming, gardening, grounds maintenance, fence building, weed whacking, trail work, landscaping, painting, and general property maintenance. At the monastery I even had to manually “dump toilets,” which is exactly what it sounds like 😂 — so I’m definitely not afraid of getting dirty or doing the less glamorous jobs!
Living in monastic communities has also given me plenty of experience with the everyday work that keeps a household or community running. I’ve cooked vegetarian meals for large groups and done a great deal of cleaning and housekeeping. I enjoy contributing wherever I’m needed and take pride in doing simple tasks well.
Before becoming a psychotherapist and yoga teacher, I served as an officer in the Canadian Army. Between the military, psychotherapy, teaching, and monastic life, I’ve learned a lot about discipline, reliability, teamwork, adaptability, and staying calm and positive when things get demanding.
Just as importantly, I really value human connection and community. I enjoy sharing meals, hearing people’s stories, laughing together, learning from different cultures, and becoming part of the everyday rhythm of a place. I’m easygoing, respectful, tidy, independent, and appreciate clear and direct communication.
Outside of work, my interests include meditation, hiking, yoga and movement, fitness, psychology, cooking, spirituality, and spending time in nature. I love learning from different ways of life and believe some of the best travel experiences come from contributing meaningfully rather than simply passing through.
If you’re looking for someone who can teach yoga, meditation, or fitness; facilitate wellness workshops; contribute to retreat or community life; and also happily roll up her sleeves and help with whatever practical work needs doing, I’d love to connect! -
