First-time Workawayer here. I love being outside, working with animals and children. Other interests of mine include soccer, poetry, theater, singing, and horseback riding. I have an engineering degree and work as an engineer but am looking to experience life outside of the corporate world. I am looking forward to making new connections with people, learning about other cultures, and lending a helping hand to whatever project comes my way!

For horse-related projects - I took riding lessons up until high school as a horse-obsessed child and have some limited experience in caring for them, but I am ready to learn more and delve in.
I have had many pets throughout my lifetime and am well-versed in caring for them (dogs, cats, rodents, fish, etc.).
Languages - I speak a limited amount of Spanish and am excited to get to either brush up my skills or start learning a new language.
I also love theater and participate in local community theater here at home. I enjoy the imaginative, creative, and playful aspects of theater. I like to work with children as well.
I have taught Junior Achievement (a class focused on financial and economic literacy) to 8-9 year olds.
In general I am very hard-working, optimistic and will bring a positive attitude to everything I do :)

Sabine is a kind woman with a big heart for animals, and with a commitment to living simply and sustainably. She has many animals to take care of in addition to operating her personal business, and any help that just makes her day a little easier is appreciated. I enjoyed my 4-week stay here and Sabine always made sure I was comfortable and had… read more what I needed. She also cooks tasty vegetarian meals which I typically enjoyed about 1x day and the other meals were on my own. Oh and she makes a delicious chocolate coffee! The workload was reasonable and I still had plenty of time to do other things and was encouraged to do so. Cabarete and Sosua are great towns. Check out the live music and dancing at Cabarete, the coral reef at Sosua beach, and definitely take a surf class at Encuentro (it was awesome!). My Spanish is pretty limited so I typically went with my host or our onsite neighbor Dina to go places, but if you are independent and learn how to take the bus that will help you be able to do even more things. Here are some of the tasks I helped with during my stay:
- Watering the garden area (front and back), typically either in the early morning or late evening. To beat the heat, the days do start early, I was usually awake by 6 am.
- Planting seeds, taking care of seedlings (tip - I learned to not plant seeds or young seedlings into the ground or bed too early because they are just too delicate especially with the dogs around. I now recommend growing them in containers first for at least 8 weeks to get a hardy plant first).
- Building/maintaining garden bed
- Sweeping the living room area and the back patio area (helping to keep the area clean)
- Doing the dishes after meals, small house tasks
- Cooking and sharing meals when I want to
- Note you do not have to do this if you do not want to (you are never forced to!), but doing a daily pick-up of the dog poop around the area is helpful and makes watering the garden easier
- Last but most importantly, spending time with the horses! Typically I would go for a few hours almost every day except for maybe one day on the weekend. You will help with feeding them, picking their feet, grooming, etc. Then you can spend time with them and help with their training. Some of them are more nervous than others and just being around new people who are gentle and caring is good for them. Look up Liberty trick training, Parelli natural horsemanship, and general ground handling skills if you want to get an idea of the types of activities. Watching Sabine direct them and train them is incredible, you can really see how her body language communicates with the horses. I did get to ride a couple of times and we took them to the beach once, it was amazing and so fun to see them splash around in the water! I should mention that riding is not a guarantee, it really depends on how the horses are doing and whether they are in good condition to ride, but it is a possibility. I loved getting to know each of the horses and their various personalities, and you will too!

Here are some things that would really be helpful if you have more handy-type skills
- Building a small fence or protector around the garden beds to keep the dogs out - You will probably need to arrange a trip to get some more supplies from the hardware store
- Repairing the first garden bed (one side is falling apart)
- Fence and arena repair on the finca
- Any house construction knowledge (they are building a small house on the finca)
