My name is Carter Wallace, and I recently graduated from the University of Vermont where I studied Microbiology and Public Health. I have worked as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician on ambulances and in emergency rooms for the last four years in Massachusetts and Vermont; and I am currently in the process of applying to medical school. In my position, I get to help people in times of need, work with all different ages and demographics, and educate patients on their health as well as train coworkers in emergency medicine. I have been an avid rock climber and skier for years, and have a great appreciation for the outdoors. While in college I started to learn Spanish and am currently conversational, but I hope to work and travel in Latin America during my time before I start medical school next year to become more fluent in Spanish, learn about different Latin American cultures, and see beautiful new landscapes!

I am an Advanced EMT and have spent years working with patients from all backgrounds and ages. I am very passionate about education and often serve as a teacher/preceptor in my jobs, but working with children and younger people especially makes me very happy and is often the highlight of my day. I I took Spanish classes in college and have been conversational in Spanish for the last couple years but I would love to learn more about the language from native speakers and work towards fluency, while possibly helping others practice/learn about English!

I spent an amazing 5 weeks (Sep 15-Oct 20) with the Gaby and her family, I would highly recommend it! I would feed the guinea pigs in the morning, have breakfast with them, then begin working for the day. The work ranged from helping pick mandarines, harvest choclo (corn), fertilize/turn soil, weed, package produce for the market and more. I even … read more went with Jorge (Gaby's brother) to the market in Ambato a couple of mornings and was able to see the massive and interesting market. Daniel (Gaby's brother) and Gaby are very active, so if you are interested in trail running/hiking they are very knowledgeable of the area. I went on a hike with Gaby and her hiking club one day and got to meet everyone. Daniel and I went to Chimborazo for a short acclimatization hike one day, and then went to the summit of Carihuairazo with his guide friend another day! Daniel also DJs in town at a bar on Saturdays where many guides hang out and introduced me to other types of guides there! Daniel introduced me to the company which I used to go to summits of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo! The family was also very accommodating when I needed to take a day off of work to go into town and take meetings from my laptop. I also went with Gaby to the school she teaches english at several times and helped teach the kids, which was so much fun! Baños is a great little town with much to do, and it is central to other cool places like Riobamba, Latacunga, Puyo ect. While it was hard to leave I will consider Gaby, Daniel, and Jorge friends for life!

Español: Pasé 5 semanas con la familia Chávez, y lo recomiendo mucho! Por la mañana, cuidaba a los cuyes y desayunaba con la familia antes de empezar el otro trabajo por el día. Les ayudaba juntar mandarina, cosechar choclo, el desyerbe, preparar para el mercado y mucho más. Algunos mañanas, fui al mercado muy grande en Ambato con Jorge (hermano de Gaby) también. Gaby y Daniel (hermano de Gaby) son muy activos y si te gusta hacer trail running/trekking ellos son muy informados! Fui en un caminata con Gaby y su club de excursionismo que me fue muy divertido. Daniel y yo fuimos en un pequeña caminata a Chimborazo para aclimatarnos un día, y un otro día fuimos a la cumbre de Carihuairazo con su amigo quien es guía y fue genial! Daniel conoce muchas guías y empresas de excursionismo en Baños y puede ayudarle con cualquier actividad que desee. El me presentó la empresa que usé para ir a la cumbre de Cotopaxi y Chimborazo! Fui con Gaby a su escuela a donde ella es profesora de ingles y le ayudé enseñar los niños! Estoy tan agradecido por la familia Chávez , su habitación, su comida (la mejora colada morada del país), mi poncho que ellos me regalaron, y su amistad! Gracias amigos, y hasta luego!
