Braeden's contributions to the chateau and to its community, are long lasting, and beautifully permanent. In the four weeks I spent at this workaway, the chateau became a home away from home. This was my first workaway and I had never been to France before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. As I was travelling to Toulouse (the nearest large city), many questions fluttered around in my head. What work will I be doing? Where will I stay and what… read more will I eat? What are the people like?

The work is flexible. There is a lot to do around the chateau, and you can often choose from a variety of tasks based on your skills and interests. I particularly enjoyed working outside, so I often chose simple manual labour (moving wood, and cleaning stables and pastures), working with dogs and horses, and running general errands. Being able to work outside with my hands in the beautiful French countryside was genuinely therapeutic. The chateau is a mosaic of all of the workawayers who have had the fortune of walking inside its grand walls. Literally. Electricians and carpenters have brought old spaces back to life, and designers have helped with the layout and furnishings of rooms. Accountants have helped build systems for bookkeeping, and gardeners have maintained a flourishing rose bed. The list goes on and on. Micaela and John encourage you to bring your unique skills and interests from where you come from in order to contribute your own twist to the chateau. Most valuable is a positive attitude, initiative, and the ability to work in a team.

The accommodations are second to none. The room I stayed in was beautiful and spacious, including a bed, sink, full couch, two chairs, and a waterfall shower all to myself. Among other amenities, the chateau features a gym, music room (complete with a piano), and pool. Furthermore, the food was incredible. John is a masterful gardener, and both John and Micaela have a passion and talent for cooking. Each meal was fresher and more delicious than the last, and I was always full, seldom snacking between meals. You will eat and learn about a variety of foods, especially cheese from the local area. Those four weeks were the healthiest and best I have ever eaten.

Lastly, I am amazed by how many meaningful connections I was able to make in a month. The other workawayers, neighbours, and workers at the chateau all became great friends of mine - whom I will continue to stay in touch with in the future. Micaela and John were incredibly generous with their time, and I really appreciated learning so much from them. Thank you.
