Description
Hello! My name is Allysann and I am a curious, open-minded, adventurous and hardworking person. I am motivated by new learning experiences and contributing to projects that have meaningful and positive impacts. I love meeting new people, learning from them, hearing their stories, and inevitably, being inspired by them. I am excited to share my adventures with others whether it be during a bus ride, a coffee and on the adventure itself !
A bit about me:
I love swimming in cold waters, eating good (and spicy!) food, spending time outdoors, music, dancing, and playing card games. I am also a musician! I play guitar, violin, and I sing and write songs.
Background:
I recently finished my BA in Environmental and International Development studies at McGill University. I loved my time in school and was grateful for the learning, conversations, and incredibly inspiring people that shaped my experience.
I have 4 seasons of work experience working on a certified organic vegetable farm (Roots and Shoots Farm in Masham, Quebec!). Here, I gained an incredible first-hand learning experience of sustainable agriculture as well as a love for farming that only grew with each returning season.
I also have experience managing community gardens where I developed and facilitated, in French and English, a 13-week gardening workshop program. I loved watching the gardens grow throughout the summer and I also grew very fond of the garden participants. I looked forward to the next time I would see them and to hearing about how they were doing.
Why I am on Workaway:
I am on Workaway as I believe this is a unique and meaningful way to travel the world. I am interested in cultural exchange, language teaching and learning, and learning new skills. I am keen to gain hands-on experiences in new places, make connections with new people and my hosts, and spend time in nature.

More details about your skills
During my time working at Roots and Shoots Farm, I spent lots of time in the fields harvesting, weeding, transplanting, as well as in the greenhouses seeding, pruning and fertigating crops. I gained hands-on experience in safely operating a range of farm equipment, including driving tractors and using various attachments. I had the opportunity to learn a wide range of farming skills and found the work both challenging and deeply rewarding!
I gained a deeper understanding of the planning and coordination required for a realistic multi-year crop rotation, the use of cover crops, natural pest and weed management, and the balanced use of organic fertilizers to build organic matter and promote fertility in soils.
I exercised and gained organizational skills in developing the gardening workshop program. Workshop topics included garden maintenance, basic botany, food loss and waste, as well as cooking activities with vegetables from the garden. I designed workshop activities tailored to participants’ preferences and comfort levels and developed all learning materials.
I also have extensive experience in event planning from my involvement with Jam for Justice McGill, a non-profit organization that raises awareness and donations through music events. I worked with an amazing team to plan and execute events ranging from 100-250 participants! I was also responsible for designing and distributing all promotional materials for fundraising events, as well as creating informational content about the recipient charity via social media and newsletters.
