Description

Hello :) I'm Abigail from Singapore, and I'm 31 years old. I worked in tech policy and environmental advocacy all through my twenties, but am now taking a break to prioritise new experiences and personal growth. For now, I just want to try living life a bit differently!

So far I've done some really fun and meaningful side quests on this break: teaching English, part-timing at a cafe and vintage store, volunteering at an eco-learning centre in a Thai nature reserve and a children's home in Nepal (DIY workaway experiences!), and running a summer school for/building community among adults in a similar season of exploration, experimentation and seeking.

I've also done some slow travel, staying and travelling with good friends and their animals in Thailand, India and the UK for a few months.

On Workaway, my goal is to learn about other cultures and ways of living, make meaningful connections, and push myself out of my comfort zone. I also want to pick up practical skills - e.g. home DIY, permaculture, growing and cooking food, working with animals, and living in harmony in nature. I'm a responsible and hard worker, and can learn and jump right into whatever you need help with!

I really love seeing the world -- soaking in a new and unfamiliar environment, travelling slow, being with and among locals, and learning about what makes different people and places tick.

Native English speaker with experience as a private tutor + public school teacher (English and physics)
I speak Mandarin (and a bit of Cantonese and Hokkien) and would be happy to do basic language exchange :)
- Pet care: I've lived in a household with 3 dogs and a professional dog handler, and can do basic dog-walking and petsitting
- Basic gardening: I've grown my own veggies at home, volunteered at community plots
- Basic cooking and housekeeping: I have F&B experience, and helped prepare food for guests at a wellness retreat in Thailand

What else ...

I love spending time outdoors and walking in nature; history, museums, comedy, books/films/TV; tennis, ping pong and yoga; good food; community singing; and of course, travelling and learning about new places and people.

I'm passionate about politics, progressive causes, storytelling and fictional worlds. I've volunteered extensively with organisations concerned with social justice and democratic values, and love diving into stories, characters and alternate universes, from fantasy to sci-fi and historical fiction.

These days, I'm trying to pick up new sports (bouldering, pickleball), get back into making art, cook more, write, and make remote freelance work for me!
