Hi! I'm Yaxkem (a very unique Mayan name my parents made for me!). I am from Guatemala, and I am 24 years old. I am currently in the final year of an undegrad in Software Engineering. Before going full onto my career, I am taking a break and looking to find a new experiences that push me out of my comfort zone, teaches me something new and helps me improve my English.

I enjoy sports, both watching and playing them, especially football (real football). Besides, as an engineering student, I also like playing video games in my free time, and I am overall interested in new technologies and innovation.

I have not been abroad all that much, so I am really interested in learning more about different cultures and lifetyles.

How can I help? I’m open to both indoor and outdoor work. I moved out my parents' at 16 to continue my studies, so I have since learnt how to handle basic household chores and be selfsuficient, in order to keep a tidy house. Plus, I actually enjoy cooking a lot (it helps me relax).

I also have some experience with outdoor work because my father loves the countryside and I’ve helped him with activities like mowing lawns, pruning trees, planting, and harvesting corn. Because of that, I don’t mind getting my hands dirty. I can use some basic tools, and if I don’t know how to use something, I’m happy to learn. I’ll always try to do my best.

Finally, I’d like to say that I’m a polite, approachable, and independent person.I’ve learned to be responsible and to handle things on my own. I understand that I’ll be staying in someone else’s home, so I’ll be respectful and take care of the place. I’ll be happy to help you.

I spent a month and a half at this place, and overall it was a great and interesting experience.

The area is beautiful. It's in a quiet town, and the property is amazing if you like nature.

The work tends to be physical, so you need to be prepared for that. Some days can be hard, while others can be lighter. You will do things like weeding, … read more planting grass, raking leaves, and other outdoor tasks. Since the property is quite big, there are always things you can find to do.

Basically, the routine is to work from Monday to Friday. Every morning at 8:00 a.m., you go to the wooden deck at Greg's house for a meeting to discuss the tasks for the day. Greg likes to work, so during the first few hours he will usually be working with you and giving you instructions. You usually work from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., and after that you are free to relax and enjoy your time.

One thing to keep in mind is that Greg is in his 90s, and sometimes he can lose his patience a little if you are not doing a task the way he explained it or if you are working too slowly. So I think it's important to be patient and communicate with him, especially if you are not used to this kind of work or if there is a reason why you are doing something differently. At the same time, Greg is a rational person. He is able to understand your point of view and even apologize if he realizes he made a mistake.

Greg is also very open to listening to your ideas and will be happy if you take initiative. In my case, together with Jean and Yi-Hsi, two nice friends I met there, we built something like a cage around the blueberry garden because the birds were eating a lot of them, and Greg was very happy with the result.

The following Monday, you can ask for payment for the previous week's work. During my stay, the payment was ¥2,500 per day.

Greg is a really interesting person. He speaks several languages, and I was very impressed by how quickly he can switch between English, Spanish, and Japanese. He has also done many interesting things throughout his life, so you will have plenty of topics to talk about with him.

Carolina is also a really nice person. She is from Peru, and as fellow Latinos, we connected very well and had many conversations in Spanish. She tries not to interfere too much with the Workawayers, but she always makes sure that you feel comfortable. I also spent some nice moments with Greg and Carolina. We went to a sashimi restaurant, a Cuban restaurant, and Carolina also showed me some beautiful beaches in Ohara.

Overall, it was a really interesting experience. I had the opportunity to practice my English a lot and meet some really nice people. Just keep in mind that you should be prepared for physical work and be willing to communicate and be patient.

So thank you so much, Greg and Carolina! I really enjoyed my stay at your place. And a special thanks to my friends Jean, Yi-Hsi, and Ruth as well. It was really nice working with you and spending time together every day!
