  • Description

Hi, I’m Valencia Wenqian. I grew up in a northern city in China, known as the country’s most humorous city. Because the winters there are so long, people use humor, warmth, kindness, and steaming hotpot to melt the snow and ice. But I’ve always been more of a summer girl—I love tropical climates, vibrant vegetation, animals, and biodiversity. I love the feeling of sunshine burning on my skin, and the endless possibilities of outdoor adventures.

Professionally, I am a development economist and social entrepreneur. I graduated in Business & Entrepreneurship from the University of Hong Kong and in International Development from Columbia University. I founded one of Asia’s most influential non-profit organizations dedicated to improving women’s and children’s health, served as a Column Director for Stanford Social Innovation Review, and have advised the Gates Foundation as well as various national governments on economic policy and impact investing.

In life, I’m a free-spirited, friendly, and creative adventurer. The seven things that bring me the most joy are: Endless sunshine and eternal summers. Outdoor adventures and extreme sports. Traveling around the world. Connecting with animals and plants. Making friends from different cultures. Spending happy moments with children. Dancing and going to theaters.

I have traveled across 21 countries, and this year marks my first year joining Workaway. Through this platform, I hope to immerse myself in local cultures, experience the peaceful flow of nature, and explore more outdoor adventures. I also look forward to celebrating traditions and festivals with local villagers and children, and contributing to sustainable and educational projects—while creating many beautiful memories together.

  • More details about your skills

I’m a natural storyteller. I can help hosts document stories through writing, photography, and more. In the past, I worked as a magazine columnist and as a university research fellow. Looking ahead, I hope to turn social innovation stories from around the world into research collections, art exhibitions, or publications in media and journals.

I’m also a design thinking coach, passionate about helping people bring their bold ideas to life—from zero to one. Whether it’s running social media to connect with people across cultures, or designing flower gardens that create beautiful experiences, I love brainstorming together and making dreams a reality.

I’m an eager learner of new skills—from growing the tastiest tomatoes on a farm, to building a treehouse on an island, to providing art education for children. I’m open to trying everything.

Above all, I’m a good friend—friendly, reliable, and full of energy.
