Hi, I’m Rory – an 18-year-old from the sunny west coast of Ireland planning a gap year adventure in Japan!

I’m super interested in Japanese culture, language, and especially music. I play jazz piano and am really into artists like Hiromi Uehara, Ryo Fukui, and Nujabes. One of my big goals this year is to explore Japan’s music scene and learn from it – jazz kissas, live shows, whatever I can find!

Last year I spent a month at a language school in France and loved the experience of being in a new place, meeting people, and learning by living. Now I’m excited to do the same in Japan – help out, try new things, and get to know the culture and people.

I’m friendly, open-minded, and always up for learning something new. Happy to help however I can – from music to manual work and if I can find time and/or a place to practice that would be amazing!

I really enjoy working with children having being employed part-time on a regular basis in a local forest school and summer camp. I am very social, enjoy outdoor activities (and even outdoor work!) - I am currently the Young Irish Jazz Musician of the Year which means I am qualified to play or teach piano (esp. jazz) anywhere, anytime! I love to cook and I love to learn to cook. I speak Irish, French, Spanish to high school level and am super interested to learn Japanese. I am fluent in English and have learned how to teach English as a foreign language. I also hold a working holiday visa for my stay in Japan.

I love to go to the gym and work out. I am an avid listener of music and reader of books. I love to learn new recipes and very open to all sorts of cultural and outdoor experiences. This is my 'gap' year between high school and university - and this trip fulfils a life-long desire to visit Japan and immerse myself in Japanese culture and especially the Japanese music and jazz scene. It is also important to me that I can find time/place to practice piano every day (note: I will have an electric piano so can practice quietly with headphones if needed).
