My major is marketing as I learned luxury marketing in France🇫🇷

Now, what I’m most passionate about is Japanese agriculture and food👩‍🌾
I often visit farms and hear their problems to try to solve them. One of my ambition is to ease the information asymmetry between producers and consumers.

I would like to find a way for Japanese farmers to communicate with consumers, and how we can make people interested in sustainable agriculture and alimentation in Japan. The Reason I am interested in this topic is in my connection between Japanese agriculture. One of the most serious problems in Japan is the shortage of farmers. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, one third of the working population has disappeared since 1980s. In Japan, historical farming methods are passed from generation to generation. However, through interviews with various Japanese farmers, I have realized that even the most successful of farmers are having difficulty finding successors to carry on historical Japanese farming traditions. Japanese agricultural products have distinct flavors, textures, and appearances unlike any other produce in the world. Since it is the historical Japanese traditions that helps to contribute to this uniqueness, it is imperative that we protect them from dying out. Also, most of the farmers which I know use sustainable farming by using the least amount of pesticides. I am from Hokkaido which is a region in Japan, famous for Japanese agriculture. My experiences growing up in a Japanese agricultural environment have shown me the potential to which Japanese agriculture have and its practices should be successfully marketed. Through marketing, I can fulfill my dream of revitalizing the Japanese agricultural industry.

I cannot believe it happened again. Another powerhouse, adventurous Workaway guest who has left me exclaiming “I thought it couldn't get any better”? Riina was constantly joyful and positive, always expressing appreciation, sincerely interested in learning and listening. She came for a week, then two, then ended up sharing 25 days of her life with… read more us. We were Russians(2), English(1), Spanish(1), French(2), various Americans and their dogs, including my own family. She joined us from the countryside of northern Japan, wishing and willing to share her passion for age-old Japanese agricultural traditions, ones that she embraces with fervor. She loved to cook. She practically never left the kitchen. She came packing her own miso from Japan. She brought authentic soy sauces. She scrutinized all foods we purchased, eschewing processed foods and ingredients. There were unending Asian fusion soups - my all time to die-for favorite cooking - both spicy hot Chinese variety and more moderate Japanese versions, the latter adding soy milk to lessen the peppery levels. There was often both Japanese and Chinese fried rice on the table. On three occasions, she responded to my pleas to make “hot pot”, even though it wasn't so popular in Japan. Her hot pots featured plentiful veggies of all sorts: mushrooms (enoki), garlic, ginger, onion, tons of cilantro, sticky rice, rice cakes, buckwheat, tofu, dried bean curd - love that stuff! - all cooked by each participant in zesty spicy broths (Wangjiadu Spicy Hot-Pot Base). Rice ramen was prepared from scratch, from her own dough recipe. There was Maki: fermented soybeans and rice, wrapped in Nori seaweed. So delicious! She even made her own hummus from red kidney beans. It was all … culinary heaven on earth! Phew!!

Thank you for all the rest too Riina: for reorganizing my hall closet, the linens and all the health stuff. It was a mess. Thanks also for attending Jeannine's choral concert. She was honored. Thank you further for your always-ready attitude to help: cooking for Elina's birthday and making it a success, resetting up my house-wide Google Assistant, helping to move all of the combustible wood chips to the rear of the property in case of fire, accepting to organize the hot pot barbecue for twenty people at Hallie’s in Alameda including all of the shopping at the Ranch 99 Asian market the day before where you knew prices and took special care to get best value, following the house rule to have breakfast on the table by 8:00 AM, sharing the family room with Léa for a week until the corner bedroom became available, sharing stories of growing up in Japan and introducing me and Kristi to your dad back in Japan on a video call while we were hiking with the dogs in Berkeley’s Tilden hills, and most important of all, caring for my dog Nala, taking her on long hikes in the mountains with and without others. These are the sorts of offerings that I receive from my guests that keep me committed as a Workaway host. With people as yourself I always receive more than I give. Once again I owe gratitude to the Workaway organization!

It was inspiring to see how overflowing with vitality you go about living, always maxing out your days with activities and your sustained appetite for learning new things. You research, seek out and cultivate friends from all over the planet! It's amazing the people that you know. You were unafraid to take one of the bikes from the house in Walnut Creek and make your way all the way to the Stanford University Educational Farm in far away Palo Alto, where you volunteered numerous times, making new friends such as the farm manager Will. You carried back fresh organic vegetables - on the bike! - for the house that Will donated on our behalf. Your constant desire to reach out to make new friends is humbling. I was pleased to introduce you to many of my non-Workaway friends: my son Maxime, Jeannine (Maxime's mother), Kristi, Kristi’s dog Goose, Kim (Kristi's friend), Aggie and her dog Milky, Vlada and her daughter Aria, and on the last day after numerous unsuccessful tries, we finally got to meet my good friend Yuri and his wife Christine and play with their son Noel in Palo Alto. Everyone really enjoyed your company. You also left a deep impression upon those of us Workaways at the house, for instance when you not only accompanied us to the open mic at the Starry Plough Pub in Berkeley one Tuesday evening, but to our amazement and astonishment, you got up unannounced to perform Born This Way by Lady Gaga. It was your first time singing in English in front of a crowd. Judging from the audience's applause, they were as impressed as your housemates!

Some final words. I'm pleased you were able to visit Muir Woods, Battery Spencer and Sutro Baths. I’m also glad we got to organize the trip to Yosemite and to hike Vernal and Nevada Falls with heavenly weather, when you participated in driving my car on our way there. I enjoyed our time hiking together and getting to know each other. I also enjoyed you taking a risk in attending the Bob Dylan concert in Oakland - you weren't so familiar with his music - especially as we did so not knowing if anyone would donate us the free tickets that eventually got us our admission. You're a brave, open-minded soul. I also enjoyed attending Stanford University's graduation in the hot sun with you on one of your last days. I will always carry a good memory of that day on your behalf. And congratulations to you. You just graduated this month from a Grande Ecole in Paris. You even speak French! As I told you on multiple occasions, I could not believe your mastery of English. I did not have to make any special effort in communicating with you. I quickly came to realize that you understood nearly everything, our American idioms included.

Riina can be described as a smiling face and positive attitude. She brought joy and laughter to our volunteer team. Everybody liked her so much , she worked in our hotel kitchens help our chef and made discoveries. Even though she once decided to stay a week she extended, when she left there is silence around for few days. I hope we meet again.
