Description
Hey, it's Jake and Rebecca!
We're in our late twenties and have been living/working/travelling together in Australia for a while now.
Having met in Melbourne during a workaway experience last October, we've discovered early on how good we are at working together. For the last three months, we've been working at restaurants as well as a rose nursery in Southern Australia and only formed a stronger sense of teamwork!
A bit about our individual backgrounds:
Rebecca:
I grew up in a very small, hilly village in western Germany, which fostered my love for exploring the forests while enjoying the fresh air. My family and I are very close and it always makes me happy to play with my four-year-old niece. To be able watch her grow up and develop is very important to me and I cherished the time back home in between my first and my current stay in Australia a lot. But there is so much more to explore here and it was an easy decision to come back!
A year ago I finished my studies with a Masters in Biological Sciences. During this time, I learned a lot about nature and animal welfare. Environmental conservation became a very important topic for me. But my love for all kinds of different species is the main reason why I like to work with animals or help caring for your plants during my time abroad.
Although I value spending time alone, I'm very empathetic and enjoy getting to know people. A fun way to spend time with friends for me is cooking or baking together and talk just about anything. I'm also very active, especially since I found my passion for Yoga, Bouldering and Wudang Kung-Fu. In my downtime, I love to relax with a good book, play the piano or solve some riddles.
I am very curious and open and want to broaden my horizon before starting the next chapter in my (everyday) life. As I am both a reliable worker and adaptable in new situations, I am excited and ready to help and learn from you!
Jake:
I am a friendly and creatively driven individual. I come from the south west of England, with ancestral roots from Scotland. I have lived and worked independently in Bristol and Cornwall since leaving home eight years ago. I adore music. I am a practicing musician, and bring my music with me wherever I go. Throughout university, I played as a bassist in my band, and on my own I play original folk music (acoustic and electric). I graduated with a Bachelor BA in Popular Music from Falmouth University in 2023.
I'm always excited by the prospect of traveling and finding like-minded and wonderful people to learn new skills and knowledge from. I'm great with children and animals, and take pride in being a respectful and friendly lodger to whomever.
My skills:
- Experienced kitchen worker. I'm tidy, efficient, and love to cook. I've worked in many kitchens.
- Experienced hospitality worker. As well as my kitchen work, I've served so many people with a friendly face. I love good interactions with people!
- Gardening. I've yet to work as a gardener professionally, but I want to! I have experience volunteering as a gardener for National Trust, at Glendurgan Garden. It's a tropical garden in Cornwall, and I learnt a lot from the gardeners there. I'm constantly tending to my folks own garden at home as well - it's a small and wild paradise for birds.
Our previous workaway experiences include helping out on a hobby farm by taking care of the property as well as the host's horses and their dog. Jake spent some time around Adelaide during December 2025 and January 2026 volunteering at 3 separate Workaways. They all involved physical, hands-on work outdoors and received good feedback on each of them.
Since Rebecca came back, we've kept that connection to the outdoors and physical work. Our job at the rose nursery involves many different tasks and taught us a lot about how a professional farm works and operates, and just how much work is involved. It has had us waking up early and achieving full days of work together.
We look forward to exchanging stories, making connections and develop new skills -

More details about your skills
I'm fluent in German and near-fluent in English and always ready to expand my vocabulary! Apart from my formal academic education in Biology, which included lab work but also focused a lot on animal behaviour and welfare, I've worked as a waitress and have some experience in babysitting children.
I very much enjoy being around and caring for animals. Up until now, I mostly got to spend time with dogs, rats, cats, rabbits and a few times with horses. I'm very eager to learn more and develop new skills! -
