Description
Hi, I’m Tiayra (like the crown) but have always gone by Tia. I also write under a pen name.
I am transitioning from a life of work in the service industry into an emerging author. In 2026, I have gotten: a fellowship to attend a prestigious artist residency for a month in Vermont; three scholarships to juried writing workshops with admired authors as faculty; and a few stories published in top literary magazines with professional pay rates. I also spent the summer helping my disabled mother with some things her case manager couldn’t take on. But mostly, I’ve been doing workaways and living the vagabond life while I write my first book. All my stuff is in a storage unit in Minneapolis, where I lived for five years.
I am a visual artist. I love drawing, painting, photography and any kind of craft projects. I enjoy being outdoors, whether I’m hiking in a forest or going on a 10 mile walk of urban exploration in a major city. I also appreciate a cozy night in. Bring on the board games! Yes to independent films.
I took Urban Conservation & Landscaping in a trade school and was a member of Future Farmers of America as a teenager. My father owns a landscaping business I worked for, mowing and pruning. I grew up on a horse farm in rural Ohio and occasionally helped out. I had tons of house pets throughout my life: cats, dogs, snakes, skunks, a ferret, saltwater fish, birds—and rabbits I showed at the county fair for 4-H. I’m no stranger to pet care. I will gladly walk dogs and scoop litter pans. I’ve also been a nanny, a professional housekeeper, and a mother’s helper who did household chores and prepared dinners. I find cleaning therapeutic and cooking gives me great joy. I love meal sharing and conversation. I prefer a workaway where I am not treated like the help and left to fend for myself, but instead treated like a part of a family or community doing my part to help.
I’m eager to learn every aspect of planting, growing, harvesting, and preserving crops. I would also appreciate learning beekeeping, making tinctures, pickling, sugaring, making beer and wine, animal husbandry and milking, cheese making.
In my workaways so far: I have taken care of sheep and chickens, collected eggs, mowed grass, planted corn, stacked wood, harvested mushrooms, and installed insulation. I also have experience planting peppers, cauliflower, eggplant, basil, and flowers. I have harvested chestnuts. I have assisted with everyday tasks like pet care, household chores, and planning and preparing high protein gluten free dairy free dinners for a host with special dietary needs, which I loved doing so much. I am an omnivore, but I have been vegan and pescatarian and paleo at different times and know how to cook everything. I am passionate about eating clean and eating seasonally. I might not have lots of reviews up yet, but I do have references if you ask. -

What else ...
I can be quiet and contemplative, or just deeply listening. Other times I can talk a great deal, if I think others are interested in what I’m saying. I consider myself an intuitive extrovert. I love meeting new people and being around others, but I’m not going to talk someone’s ear off when they’re not genuinely engaged in the conversation. I read, meditate, and write in quiet hours. I love exploring little towns, going to farmers markets, and swimming in natural bodies of water. Please show me local gems. :)
