We are Merle and Emily, two friends who have just graduated from high school. Now, before we start studying, we want to travel around Australia and explore different authentic sides of the country.

I (Emily) have been working in the restaurant industry for about two years now, and currently work for an event company. I love that my work allows me to do a variety of tasks and meet new people all the time. In addition, I really enjoy babysitting for my neighbors.

I (Merle) previously completed a voluntary social year, working in an after-school care program, where I supported children in their daily routines and activities. I also have experience working in a school kitchen, helping with food preparation and serving meals. Growing up with younger siblings and babysitting has made me comfortable, responsible, and patient when working with children.

Having both grown up in large families, we love being part of a society with open communication and a division of labour. Both of us love spending time outdoors and in nature, which is one of the reasons Australia really attracts us —its landscapes, wildlife, and outdoor lifestyle. We also enjoy creative work and practical tasks where we can use our hands and learn something new. Through Workaway, we are hoping for meaningful exchanges, learning new skills, and experiencing Australia in an authentic, hands-on way.
