Hi! My name is Matthijs, I’m 23 years old and recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in applied physics in the Netherlands. I have a passion for being active and outdoors – I love (trail)running, hiking, and surfing, and I’m interested in just about every outdoor sport. I also spent last year teaching at a primary school for autistic and/or gifted children, so I can help out with children’s education if needed.

With my travels, I’m on a personal mission to immerse myself in different cultures around the world, to learn from the people I meet and the places I stay. I see this as a way to broaden my perspective, collect unique experiences, and shape my own philosophy. Workaway is the perfect chance to combine this with meaningful work and real connections.

I’m social, eager to pick up new skills, and like contributing wherever I can – whether it’s physical work, helping out in daily routines like cooking, or bringing energy and positivity to a team.

Description of skills:

Outdoor work: Comfortable with physical tasks such as gardening and general labor. I’m not very experienced in DIY or construction, but I’m enthusiastic and quick to learn.

Sports and activities: Passion for endurance sports and outdoor activities. Completed an Ironman 70.3 this year and enjoy trail running, hiking, surfing, and other outdoor sports.

Teaching and education: Worked as a teacher for a primary school class with autistic and/or gifted kids for one day a week for one year and have experience tutoring students in various subjects.

Cooking and hospitality: Four years of living with eight housemates taught me how to cook for larger groups. In addition, I have three years of experience working in the hospitality industry, which makes me comfortable in kitchen and service environments.

Tech knowledge: Background in physics and experience running a startup where I taught people how to use AI tools effectively.

Driving: Holder of a valid driver’s license.

Reading and knowledge: Passionate about reading, with a strong interest in philosophy, psychology, and fantasy/science fiction.

What else ...

Reading is a big passion of mine – I usually finish a book every two weeks. I’m especially interested in philosophy, psychology, science, and fantasy. Some of my favourite authors include Friedrich Nietzsche, Carl Jung, David Bohm, and Brandon Sanderson. I’ve also been practicing meditation since I was 16 and enjoy yoga as part of my routine.

Sports have always been a big part of my life – I played football for 14 years and spent much of my childhood sailing and skiing. Now I've switched more to endurance sports, but still have a big passion for surfing, sailing en skiing.

Cooking is another hobby I enjoy, especially experimenting with new dishes. I like to play the piano in my free time. Though I don't play that much anymore. Lastly, I enjoy all types of board or card games and I'm a pretty decent chess player.

I enjoy sharing these interests with others but I’m equally happy learning about theirs.
