  • Description

I’m a Brazilian girl in love with life. I love to experience new places, cultures, and to try new experiences. I was born in a small town in south Brazil. I completed my teaching license and pursued an elementary school teaching career. After that, I co-founded a veterinary business and handled many of the administration and animal care duties. I love to learn new skills and add many different meaningful experiences to my life while contributing to my community.

Yet, throughout all of these paths I searched out in my small hometown, I always had the dream of traveling. I had the feeling as the world was calling me and it was time to listen. I decided to apply for an exchange program and was accepted for the J1 Visa program to work at Morning Glory Farm in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA. The program was amazing! It was for one year and my duties included working with livestock (cows, chickens, pigs), driving the tractor, making hay, feeding, working with vegetables and greenhouses, and managing the living quarters for all of the workers on the farm. I was very good at this because I am a people person and I like to live in a way that everyone feels like part of the community. I enjoy sharing my culture and language with others, and take time to make and share a local Brazilian tea time, called a Terere, with friends.

I absolutely loved my exchange program and made a lot of friends. I wanted to continue exploring the world and embarking upon new adventures and experiences, so a co-worker told me about an opportunity to volunteer as a WorkAway guest on a 100 acre farm in the U.S. Virgin Islands with 18 horses, a donkey, chickens, cats, and two gardens. I applied and was accepted! I continued to expand my knowledge about livestock, horse care and grooming, horseback riding, and I advanced quickly to become a horseback riding tour guide. Every morning, I prepared breakfast for my team before work, helped prepare all meals, helped with daily chores such as laundry and cleaning, drove out and brought in the horses, fed and watered them, cared for the garden, tacked up the horses for horseback riding tours, picked up the guests, participated in the welcome circles, helped people who have never ridden a horse before with boarding horses and learning to ride, and helped lead and ride horses in the sea. The people I met were from all over the world so I got to learn about a lot of new cultures and made new lifelong friendships that I will always cherish, while gaining experience riding horses properly.

I love to learn new skills and I enjoy learning new cultures and languages. I am fluent in English and Portuguese. I am very good with children and people of all ages and backgrounds. I easily bond with animals and I make good decisions to keep a healthy home and lifestyle. I love to be home cleaning, cooking, and hosting guests rather than going out.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my path and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send me a message!

    ~ Mari
