Description

I love the outdoors and being surrounded by the peace and quiet of nature, taking in all the beauty it has to offer, rain or shine. I have a deep love for animals and will always do whatever I can to keep them happy and healthy; nothing beats the companionship of a 4 legged friend. I’m especially passionate about horses and riding, so any chance to ride is an added bonus. I am young and healthy and will do anything I can to help out.

I have basic knowledge of animal care, I’ve worked with horses before so can clean out, water/feed, lead and ride confidently on my own (walk/trot/canter). I have limited experience looking after farm animals (cows/sheep/chickens) but willing to learn.
I have my own dog and bunnies, which are spoilt beyond belief.
I am hardworking, will do my best with any task and with correct guidance will pick up new skills quickly.
I am very tidy and will leave spaces as I would want to find them, I am not great and cooking but can manage few basic meals.

Well, Kate was a perfect workaway for me. We got along really well and she did everything without complaint!

I spent three months from April to early July and I feel very lucky to have landed at Jackie’s house. Jackie’s profile was very descriptive and gave so much information about what each month would look like and I honestly feel I picked the best months to go. I arrived at Jackie’s when it was knee deep in snow and by the end of my three months … read more there was no weather I hadn’t yet experienced; from snow storms and shovelling snow to river ranching and making poop walls to hot sunny days and thunder storms. It was so completely different to home and I loved that. Even more so when on my last day we got multiple tornado alarms (definitely doesn’t happen at home!).

There are many many animals at Jackie’s, each requiring basic but thorough care which involves watering and feeding twice a day, you do also get to collect lots of different kinds of eggs, so regularly checking nest boxes to make sure they were clean was important. At first it can seem daunting but with dedication and drive does not take long to pick up and becomes second nature very quickly. Looking after the animals is a huge part of the experience but there are also other jobs to get involved with, none being difficult but can require some effort such as moving birds, moving panels, setting up new pens, doing yard clean ups, gardening and more recently re-sanding pens. The biggest job I helped with, but was no surprise to me, was cleaning every animal pen after a long winter, there was no pen I hadn’t cleaned but for sure Jackie made sure there was enough workaways to make the task seem less overwhelming. In addition to helping Jackie, I had the opportunity to help out at some of her neighbours, not only did this give me funny stories to tell but allowed me the chance to experience something unique such as getting to partake in branding calves and bottle feeding baby goats.

It’s true Jackie puts in the effort to make sure workaways have the best experience, during my stay we did so many cool things from bird auctions to farm fairs to powwows, bull riding and bear (and emu) hunting, to name a few which I definitely wouldn’t get to do anywhere else. I also really enjoyed other activities Jackie planned, such as our canoe trip whereby we got to see a moose up close walking along the river banks, and I was lucky enough to go riding three times, getting to ride both english and western. All I can say is the treks Jackie took us on had the most beautiful scenery, from lake lookouts to forest adventures spotting Saskatchewans national flower.

My favourite time had to be during lambing, I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to watch lambs being born. To then be fortunate enough to get to watch them grow and play with one another was the most wholesome thing, for sure the sheep became one of my favourite animals very quickly. Especially when Jackie rescued two orphan lambs, Hair and Wool, from a neighbour and gave me the responsibility of bottle feeding them everyday, I feel lucky to have had that chance because I’ll never forget the way those lambs depended on me and quickly became my little buddies who followed me everywhere. I will also never forget when Jackie got a new bunny, Pumpkin, which she allowed me to take and look after, I’ve honestly never known a rabbit with so much character.

I can say for certain Jackie and her family 100% welcome you into their house, and make you feel part of the family. On top of that, and thanks to Jackie for hosting multiple workawayers, I had the chance to meet some incredible people who made my time here even more memorable. I very much loved the daily hustle and bustle at Jackie’s, no two days were ever the same and there was rarely a quiet or boring moment as Jackie always had a story to tell, the best part being you never knew how it would end, so for sure never hide in your room because you won’t know what you’re missing. I never once felt homesick because Jackie made the effort to become your friend, and it meant a lot knowing she trusted us to look after the house so she could take John for a surprise birthday trip away.

Jackie, I am grateful for everything (especially you “waking” me up to take us to go see the northern lights (in July!) on my last night) and I hope one day soon I’ll be back to visit. (I miss my lambies)
