Description
My names Joel and I'm from a town called Hastings in the UK.
My two favourite things in life are music and food. I have been making music and playing instruments since I was very young and recently finished studying sound engineering at university in Bristol, UK. I love discovering new music from around the world, particularly drums and percussion. I played in a Brazilian samba band for many years when I was younger, drummed in many bands and have been lucky enough to learn Gamalan from the talented musicians in the community that my best friend is from in Bali.
I have always worked in kitchens and love cooking because of that. My best friend Kadek is Balinese and my first kitchen job was working for his father, Eka. He taught me to cook properly and introduced me to Indonesian cooking - to this day it's still my favourite food in the world! I have also spent 5 years working in my Thai friend's kitchen. His name is Pajon and he runs a food stall called Thai Mania with his daughter Yanni. Spending my summers travelling around the UK with them serving Southern Thai food has been one of the best experiences I've ever had. I've learned so much about their food and culture and I'm desperate to learn more!
I want to take on Workaway jobs to learn about the people and places that I stay. Being able to spend such long periods of time with Kadek and his dad and Pajon and his family over the years has meant a lot to me - it's why I think it's important to me to spend a longer time in a new place, to have that same learning experience.
I've also never learned a language beyond a few words here and there which is a challenge that I really want to face - staying somewhere for a while would be a great chance to really invest myself in this.

More details about your skills
I have worked full time since leaving school and have a lot of experience in catering and hospitality. I have worked in restaurants, hotels, bars and large events all around the UK. I can cook lots of traditional English food and I'm always excited to learn recipes from new countries and cultures.
Whilst working on the Thai Mania festival food stall I would drive around the country for 4 months every year, building the stall and the kitchen, selling food for 5 days, and then taking the kitchen apart and driving to the next event. It gave me a lot of experience with logistics, travel and simple construction.
I have organised lots of music events in the UK managing the event safety, event promotion and the finances as well as performing. I also run an independent record label in the UK called Spice Rack Records (@spicerackrecords), releasing and managing music for young artists.
At university I studied music production and sound engineering . During my studies I researched live music scenes all around the world and particularly, how to ensure that live music and music venues can be sustained in difficult economies.
I am fluent in English, it is the only language that I speak though. I am really interested to learn another language and I would be comfortable teaching English.

Ever since the first time I went abroad when i was 15 to Morocco it has been my dream to run a youth hostel and restaurant - I have no idea where but that's my dream job!
I'm terrible at juggling but I'm trying to get better...

The work was very engaging and fair, and in return we were fed like royalty and accommodated really nicely. The local village is lovely as is the surrounding scenery and mountains!
