Description

Hi! We are Jade and Sawyer, both from New York City. We graduated from college last year (May 2025) and have had the wonderful opportunity to travel, volunteer, and teach across Asia and Africa ever since.
We are passionate about Indigenous rights and the preservation of Indigenous land, culture, and communities across the world. We believe in global solidarity and are so thankful for the opportunities to connect with likeminded people and organizations through this platform.
We love teaching! Sawyer is an English teacher with an Advanced 350-hour TEFL diploma. In college, Sawyer specialized in education for refugees and those with extended gaps in their formal schooling. Both of us have teaching experience and have completed university-level courses on 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language'. We have both worked in numerous childcare settings in New York as well. We are happy to share our resumes, references, and relevant certifications per request :-)
In addition to teaching English, we are happy to lead a variety of workshops and projects. Jade is a photographer, and was a basketball coach prior to our travels. She also has a background in karate, and is generally quite sporty, and loves to share that with students. Sawyer has a background in dance, drama, and creative writing, so she can give ballet lessons, or even help the students to create a school play.

For any volunteers out there who are searching for organizations which actually make a substantial impact, look no further. The students here, the vast majority of … read more whom are stateless, are clearly so much better off than they would be without this program. Multiple pupils have been able to achieve legal status, all thanks to their martial arts training. It really is incredible. Personally, I am so moved by our time here and feel so inspired to think outside of the box in terms of supporting upward mobility for disenfranchised youth. Very few organizations that I am aware of have taken this approach, so it really is a one of a kind experience.
As for the work itself, it is low stress. The students are happy to be there, and eager to learn even when they're tired. Volunteer teachers will design their own lessons and simply log them in a google doc at the end of the day. Outside of class, your time is your own. For those interested in joining in on the workouts, you're generally welcome to do so. If you'd prefer not to, you can visit the beach in the evenings (the property is truly right by the sea), visit the neighboring resort to use their wifi, or take a grab, borrow the car, or use the resort's free shuttle to visit town. The island is small, so its possible to see most of it during your time.
The community was incredibility supportive and affirming. It is wonderful to connect with the students, and we felt very comfortable. There is minimal stress for volunteers, and we weren't micromanaged in the slightest. We were even picked up from the airport when we arrived and dropped off at the ferry port when we departed, which was so kind. This was the most relaxed volunteer position we have had thus far.
I do recommend bringing some of your own essentials, such as a pillow. Although sheets and pillows are provided, it is up to the previous volunteers to have laundered them and ensure it has been appropriately taken care of, which was not exactly the case for us. I also suggest purchasing a pair of flip flops for the bathroom, as it is shared with the students who shower a couple times during the day, so its usually pretty wet. Nothing major, but worth keeping in mind!
Overall we are so thankful for this experience and sincerely hope to return in the future.

Please be warned, whatever is going on here is not right.
I was initially hesitant to leave a review, so it has taken me a while to do so. I am so confused by the high number of positive responses and want to warn any future volunteers. This workaway is NOT what it seems. Upon contacting the hosts, we had a warm exchange, and explained that we are … read more English teachers, that we love young kids and animals, and would love to come teach. The hosts were so friendly and welcoming while messaging, and said that they would love to have us. Once we arrived to the property, which is indeed very beautiful, we were a bit confused, as there were no children, just a few large dogs. In the message exchange prior to arrival, we only spoke about creating fun English lessons for the kids, our certifications, and our previous childcare experiences. They failed to mention that the school was not yet in operation. Upon meeting them, the hosts were unfortunately much less personable than they had been while messaging. Instead, they seemed nervous, and shared that there were no children, and that there was no school. Of course, we asked why there aren't any students, and what they would like us to do instead... They told us that there are no children because it is not safe for them yet, as the property is *INFESTED WITH SNAKES*. Moreover, our job would be to "clear the snakes". They literally gave us each a shovel and a large stick, with no other instruction. They did not give us a tour of the property or any semblance of a schedule or agenda. Not to mention, these aren't average garden snakes. Rather, the property is home to a variety of large and highly venomous snakes. Mind you, we are two young ladies who came to this workaway explicitly to be English teachers. There was absolutely zero mention of snakes ahead of time, let alone the fact that the school did not yet exist. We felt totally confused, anxious, and frankly manipulated into a situation that we never would have knowingly put ourselves in.
We ended up just staying for one night, and during that time we did see 3 snakes. We chose to leave the next morning because we knew something was not right. It has now been a few months since this took place, and we have since attended 4 other workaways since, none of which have been misleading at all. It is difficult to express how bizarre of an experience this was. I am so grateful that we chose to leave, and honestly still so confused about this whole thing. Whatever is going on here is seriously not right. Even the one meal we shared with the hosts and two other volunteers was eery and awkward. Literally no one spoke, despite us trying to be friendly and conversational. The two of us joke now that it felt like the beginning of a cult movie.
I just wanted to share our experience so that other potential volunteers are aware of the situation. The reality of the volunteer experience is absurdly misrepresented by the listing and other reviews. This is truly not a good situation to involve yourself in, especially for other young women.
