  • Description

Hello, my name is Hannah-May. I'm 33 year old community herbalist, forager, multidisciplinary artist, educator & PhD researcher. In 2024 I set up my school 'Hedge School' which combines the disciplines of storytelling, pigment work, plant work & writing into bespoke curriculums that I share in marginalised communities, primarily in charities & NGO's. I enjoy being in community, but I also love time to myself - to write & make. I weave, make cordage, I work with earth, making it into paint & ink. I'm currently working on my first book & I also sing ballads; apprenticed to the late Scottish Traveller Duncan Williamson's wife. Food, cooking, learning new skills, walking, wild swimming, stories, dancing, music, reading, conversation & being with plants are things I love.
I've worked on many different workaway projects over the years & travelled a lot, volunteering on projects as diverse as goat shepherding & dry stone walling. I'm a very curious person & like to learn new skills so I'm very happy to help where help is needed.
In my 20's I set up a housing cooperative & travelled the country visiting people living in alternative communities, so I am well versed & comfortable being in many different environments.
At present my interests are permaculture & organic growing so any opportunities to help on projects such as these would be great.

  • More details about your skills

I've done many workaways - (frustratingly my old account won't let me in!) and for several years lived in a housing cooperative that I co-founded. So, I'm very happy at mucking in with help where it's needed. I'm a keen learner & I love learning new skills.
For 2 years I lived in Spain working on Organic Farming projects - in this time I helped build straw bale houses, built dry stone walls, worked on spanish markets, shepherded goats, helped with making preserves, harvesting, olive harvests, growing, dog sitting.
I love to cook & used to do this at big festivals as a catering manager so I enjoy cooking for people, cooking with other people & helping in the kitchen.
I love land work - weeding, planting, harvesting, pruning. I'm happy building things but only with clear instruction, though I have built several dry stone walls & herb gardens (which are still standing). I've also laid & built steps. I love animals, particularly dogs & I'm very happy looking after pets. I really enjoy painting & decorating. Generally, I'll throw my hand at anything & most of the time I'm grand.

  • What else ...

I'm a certified community herbalist & I'm very keen to learn more herbal skills - currently deciding whether to train as a Consulting Herbalist or do a PhD. I'm an avid reader & I love folklore. I have a keen interest in local history, particularly in Ireland & Yorkshire; my family were Irish & I was raised in Yorkshire. I'd love to learn more woodwork skills, more homesteading skills & deepen my knowledge of fermentation & growing. At home I have an allotment I grow medicinal herbs, flowers, fruit & veg on. So, learning growing skills would be fantastic. At present I don't drive but I have my test in July & hopefully I'll pass!
