  • Description

Hello! We are Oscar and Hanna, a couple on an open-ended cycling tour around the world.🚲 Oscar is originally from San Francisco, and Hanna is originally from Japan, but we now call Hawai’i (the middle ground!) home. We started our bike trip in June of 2025 in Hannover, Germany, and have already experienced a great deal of incredible natural beauty and the kindness of strangers.
As lovers of the great outdoors and travel, we set out on this trip in search of adventure and to learn more about the world—its people, cultures, and histories. We joined Workaway after hearing about it from fellow travelers and thought it would be a great experience to incorporate into our bike trip, as a way to gain a deeper understanding of a place, while also enjoying the exchanging of skills and working communally with others toward a common, positive goal. Below, you can read more in-depth about our interests and prior work experiences, but to give an overview, we have both worked extensively in the realm of art/design and sustainable architecture in our professional lives, and strive to live an eco-friendly life that’s closely connected to the natural world in our personal lives. We are lovers of animals and admirers of plant intelligence.🌿 As life-long learners, we’re always interested in learning new skills and philosophies. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us!😊

    🧑🏼‍🎨 + 📐
Before full-time traveling, we both worked for a sustainable architecture firm based on the Big Island of Hawai’i, specializing in building with bamboo, the most rapidly renewable building material on earth! Oscar worked on architectural design, while Hanna worked on graphic design (branding, social media, building the firm’s website). Although most of our tasks focused on the design side of the operation, we both regularly joined the build process of our homes, and are not afraid to get our hands dirty doing construction. Additionally, prior to the aforementioned job, we both worked for an independent artist in Germany doing fabrication, working with metal, stone, wood, and lighting. As people who have worked extensively in the art & design world, we can boast a keen attention to detail, and a genuine joy in the hands-on creation process!

    🛠️ + 🥘
Oscar is very handy, having completed many woodworking DIY projects for the several apartments where he lived to create beautiful living spaces. Hanna absolutely loves to cook, and while she has never done it professionally, she really enjoys crafting recipes and cooking for groups of friends and family. Also, living in a place where cost of living is high, she likes to think she has mastered the art of creating budget-friendly meals that don’t compromise on flavor.

One of our combined passion projects while living at home in Hawai’i was working the land and planting a food garden. This involved large-scale invasive tree removal, rock wall building, and learning about indigenous planting practices in order to live harmoniously with the land. We’ve also worked with local groups to remove invasive grasses from the wetlands on the island, in order to preserve these important ecosystems—all by hand! Hanna also has experience in turning plastic waste and marine debris collected during beach cleanups into sellable small products such as earrings, wallets, and pouches.

    🐈‍⬛ + 🐕
We are animal lovers! At home in Hawai’i, at the height of our little “zoo”, we had 4 goats, 2 dogs (including a senior dog that required special care), and 2 cats as furry family members. This has made us very familiar with animal care. Oscar was even a professional dog-walker in his early 20’s! He worked for an agency in New York City, and walked up to 10 dogs a day. While neither of us have experience in horse husbandry, we are both very drawn to horses, and would love the opportunity to learn more about this world.

  • What else ...

For around 8 years before coming on this bikepacking trip, we lived a plant-based lifestyle and therefore have lots of experience in preparing vegan food. Now, we are flexible omnivores, having found ourselves in some remote areas where food options are limited. Although it has been a change, we’ve really been enjoying eating different regional dishes and learning about a location’s culture through the local cuisine!
