  • Description

Hey there, I'm Gwen! I'm a frequent traveler, first time Workawayer, currently based in the Midwest. I've been to nine different countries so far and roadtripped across the United States. I spent the last couple years completing a master's degree in history so I've been a bit more sedentary, but I'm looking forward to traveling again, meeting new people, and helping out wherever I can.

I'm passionate about education, art, cooking, community building, and the natural world. I find I'm most fulfilled when I can keep a balance between intellectual and practical projects, and I never mind hard work, especially when I know it's for a good cause. I enjoyed getting my hands in the dirt when I worked in native gardening and landscaping just as much as I enjoyed connecting with students as a teaching assistant. I also love preparing meals to share with friends and family. Food has always been a creative outlet for me and an opportunity to bring people together. In my free time I'm usually working on one craft or another: textiles, collage, block printing, all skills I'd be happy to share! I can be very self directed , but I almost always prefer to work collaboratively.

Favorite place I've traveled to: Valparaíso, Chile
Favorite food: homemade pasta (it's as much about the making as it is the eating)
Favorite poem: "Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front," by Wendell Berry

  • More details about your skills

Most of my background is in education. I've been an archival researcher, a teaching assistant in history at the university level, an ESL tutor, and I've volunteered doing environmental education workshops with middle and high schoolers. I can put together and deliver a lesson plan, as well as facilitate discussion groups and more hands on activities. I'm especially interested in alternative education and democratic classroom models.

I've also worked in landscaping, gardening, and environmental restoration. I have experience with invasive species removal, prepping sites for planting, installation, and general upkeep. Professionally, I've worked with midwestern wildflowers and grasses, but I also keep an herb and vegetable garden most years, and I love foraging for wild edibles (my favorite is the pawpaw).

I'm a self taught cook and baker with experience cooking for upwards of 20 people. Most of what I make is vegetarian or vegan and I'm always excited to incorporate fresh local ingredients.
