  • Description

My name is Emily. I am a fully qualified teacher and psychotherapist from the UK.

I made a promise to myself when I entered my 30s that in 2024 I would travel the world. Whilst I have done a lot of travelling, this is my first time doing an extended trip and travelling SE Asia. I would like to connect with local people, understand and learn from different cultures, and experience things I wouldn’t otherwise experience as a tourist. I would love to share my skills in teaching, promoting wellbeing, and the creative arts. I hope that through Workaway, I can meet people I can call friends for life.

For some of my trip I will be joined by my digital nomad partner. Whilst together we would mostly look to stay as paying guests in hotels or co-working spaces and I would commute to a work-away. For portions where I travel solo I would love to connect with people and fully immerse myself in the Workaway experience.

I look forward to meeting you and making new friends.

I am a fully qualified teacher with a postgraduate teaching degree from the Univeristy of Cambridge. After teaching for 9 years I retrained as a
psychotherapist. In the UK I work for the National Health Service in mental health, delivering 1:1 and group therapy for a range of mental health difficulties.

My experience working in education as a curriculum manager involved designing qualifications and curriculums as well as training teachers. This is something I would be happy to contribute to at local schools or charities who would like guidance on teacher training or curriculum design.

Through Workaway, I hope to be able to use my professional skills and knowledge in education on formal or informal teaching programmes in a number of subjects including English.

As a therapist in the NHS I would also be happy to look as sharing my professional knowledge for well-being programmes.

With my experience working in, and teaching speech and drama I understand how to build confidence and deliver engaging information to different audiences including tourists. My skills are varied, but I would hope to create something amazing with my Workaway hosts to meet their individual goals and needs.

  • What else ...

I am in my 30s, and much prefer sitting and talking to people, exploring new places and wildlife than partying all night. I have been brought up to respect people from different cultures and beliefs, particularly as I am of mixed heritage (Turkish and European).

I have travelled around Europe, the Caribbean, North Africa, Central America and Central Asia - loving every minute of it.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, listening to music, playing piano, exploring nature, caring for animals, and arts & crafts. Whilst at home I run an informal monthly crochet club. I am currently learning British Sign Language to increase my skill set.

I have previously volunteered in the UK as an events manager and shop assistant for Cancer Research UK. I also volunteered as a companion for older adults through Age UK. I volunteered in the local church during coffee mornings for isolated adults. I ran craft workshops across the UK for 6 summers in; crochet, macramé, water colour painting, and wood carving. Whilst studying and working in film, I also worked as a bar tender and waitress.
