  • Description

I am currently studying furniture making and design and will finish the second year of my degree course in May. I am looking for a workaway with horses where I can improve my riding and groundwork skills. With 11 years work in agriculture I am confident around large animals. I rode as a child, and 3 years ago did 2 months experience with horses in France and spain - I currently ride a friends pony in the hills of Connemara whenever I get the chance. However, I want to spend more time with horses to hone my understanding of horse body language and become a better rider.

I have been doing carpentry jobs and event jobs for the last 7 years. I can make furniture and build structures and love working with wood. The event jobs involved erecting heras fencing, steel for signage and festoon (lighting), traffic management, resource planning and manging teams. I have been repairing my own van for the last 7 years so can assist with mechanical projects. Prior to this I worked as a shepherd and beef cattle herdsman for 11 years. I also have a passion for chickens as I used to breed and show them.

I have been living off grid in a van with my dog for the past 7 years so I am content with basic accommodation. I would really like to stay somewhere with heating.

My greatest experiences have all related to nature and other animals, e.g. sharing my life with my dog, seeing a red squirrel, seeing an otter on the wild, swimming near wild dolphins in the sea, the first calf i pulled, mountain biking in beautiful scenery, quad biking at work in the Scottish hills. i play Scottish and irish trad on the fiddle (violin). I like mountain biking, inline and ice hockey and wild swimming.

I am travelling with my dog Rosie who is 13. She is used to being around sheep, cattle, hens, cats, chicks and ducklings. She is kind and patient with young children. As she is getting older she sleeps a lot of the time and her greatest want is a warm and comfortable bed.

  • More details about your skills

I am hard working, enthusiastic and physically fit. I am strong and have good practical skills. I like building with wood. I can do basic mig welding. I learn quickly and enjoy the challenge of mastering new skills. I am used to working independently and can be left to my own devices. I have 11 years experience working with chickens, sheep, beef cattle and dairy cattle. I have good problem solving skills so can often come up with solutions to problems.

I am not very good at cooking, and I don't enjoy it. I would much rather be repairing things or shovelling poo!
