  • Description

Hello! We’re Daniel and Rowie — a couple from the UK who are passionate about nature and are excited to see the world!

We met in 2022, on the tiny island of Alderney in the Channel Islands, where we both worked for a local wildlife charity: Daniel as the ecologist and Rowie as the outreach and education officer. Living on an island of just 2,000 people, with limited resources, taught us how to problem-solve and adapt while keeping a positive attitude.

Since then, we have lived in different parts of England while continuing our work in the environmental sector. After three years of long-distance, we’re excited to finally spend time together while travelling. We plan to be in South America between March and July and Europe between July and October.

Daniel is an experienced ecologist, keen bird ringer and has volunteered at bird observatories in Denmark and Greece. He is also sporty, enjoys playing music (he plays the tenor horn), wild swimming and has an interest in history.

Rowie loves being creative (especially crocheting) and learning new cooking recipes, but also enjoys being outside running or hiking. She also has experience working with children and running activities at playgroups (kindergarden) and youth groups.

We both also have hospitality experience and have lived in shared group and staff housing (we are very tidy). We are also hard-working, reliable and are happy to help with gardening, sustainability projects, DIY, animal care, hospitality, housework, or anything else you may need support with. We love meeting new people, learning new skills and working as part of a team.

    - British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) licence for bird ringing/banding.
    - Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Level 3 Sailing and Boat Handling.
    - Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Level 2 Powerboat Handling.
    - International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers - (STCW) Certificate.

    - Brushcutter/Strimmer Certificate.

    Other skills:
    - Working with volunteers - I have led volunteer groups in a range of outdoor conservation activities (including bird ringing projects, habitat protection, animal surveys, public engagement etc) ensuring tasks are carried out safely and efficiently, and that the volunteers are enjoying themselves.
    - Working with animals - I have been bird ringing since I was 15, but am also confident working with larger livestock. I used to look after a small herd of cattle and have been a keen horse rider.
    - Wildlife surveys - As an Ecologist, I have been in charge of many different wildlife surveys including: bats, moths, birds, invasive plants and insects, small mammals and butterflies.
    - Data entry - Following on from the wildlife surveys, I have experience recording, entering and analysing the data collected, making sure the information is clear, correct and secure.
    - DIY and building - I am a very practical person and over the years have been involved in many building projects, from installing large bird boxes to fixing fences, building small bridges and creating wildlife ponds. I am willing to put my hands to anything to help out.
    - Customer care & hospitality - I have previously worked in a popular bar and kitchen and learnt how to remain calm, efficient and friendly during busy and high-pressure periods. Additionally, I spent 6 months as a tour guide on a small island (natural and cultural history) and am a confident public speaker.
    - Team building - I participate in a number of team sports (sailing, frisbee, cricket) and help lead adventure holidays for children of varying ages and abilities. I have also worked in small teams on offshore islands and remote locations so know how to build good team spirit.
    - Agriculture - Experience with working on small market gardens planting, maintaining, harvesting and packaging produce. I have also cared for my own allotment for over 15 years, learning about growing different food. In recent years, I've learnt how to drive tractors and use trailers.

    Rowie
    Qualifications and certificates:
    - Undergraduate degree in Zoology with Conservation from Bangor University.
    - Level 3 Animal Management (Science and Behaviour) Extended Diploma (City and Guilds).
    - Level 3 Award in Community Organising (The National Academy of Community Organising).
    - Level 2 Award in Child Safeguarding (Islands Safeguarding Children Partnership)
    - Ladder and Stepladder User Certificate (Ladder Association).
    - Outdoor First Aid Certificate.

    Other skills:
    - Working with children - In my previous job as Outreach Officer, I visited the local playgroup and youth group frequently to run activities, with a focus on wildlife and the environment. These have included moth trapping, creating bee hotels, making bird feeders and tree planting. Since then, I have worked with older students to create information videos about pine martens and helped organise 'family fun days'.
    - Community work - I have worked with a number of community groups supporting local wildlife. For my current job, I have helped the Men's Shed Association build den boxes for pine martens in Wales (to encourage the return of this native species). Previously, while working at Seal Rescue Ireland, I volunteered with the local refugee group on several beach cleans.
    - Working with animals - I previously worked at a childrens farm and a degree in Animal Management, which has given me confidence and practical experience working with and around livestock (cows, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas) and small animals.
    - Organising events - I have organised and supported several different types of events, from small jumble sales and beach cleans to larger and more formal events, such as the 'Ocean Gala' art auction. Here, we raised £3000 in one night for marine conservation.
    - Creativity - I am a creative person and enjoy using this skill. I have designed displays, leaflets, information boards and planned events and educational activities. I enjoy all arts and crafts!
    - Customer care and hospitality - I have years of experience working in hospitality and retail and developed strong customer service, teamwork, and communication skills.
    - Fundraising - I have experience of fundraising for charities in a variety of ways, including running weekly pub quizzes, hosting bake sales, making jewellery for information centres to sell and helping out at jumble sales. I am happy to help out in whatever way I can!
