  • Description

Have been a volunteer on an off throughout my life, both at home and abroad, mostly in SE Asia. Was a VSO volunteer for several years back in the early 1990s, working as a fishery instructor at an agricultural college in NE Thailand. Combining voluntary work, especially related to environmental conservation, social justice, agroecology, etc. with travel and meeting new people in different cultures and contexts is something that inspires me.
Currently at a fork in my life and want to try something new in Portugal and/or Spain for a year or so, gaining a deeper understanding of permaculture and sustainable living systems that might come in useful in the future, is my present motivation to travel at this time.

  • More details about your skills

Have worked overseas in SE Asia for many years in a variety of development fields, encompassing rural development, water resources, sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, environmental conservation, to name a few. Also taught in tertiary education colleges, universities and schools at various times in Thailand and elsewhere, including in the US, in international development related subjects.
I have an MSc in Sustainable Agriculture and PhD in International Development, specialised in the socio-politics of water resources development in NE Thailand. I have researched this field since throughout the Lower Mekong Basin, but am now interested in a change to learning more practical skills related to personal/community sustainability and transition to low-carbon futures. I want to start my quest in Portugal and Spain and see where the path leads.....

  • What else ...

Hobbies include eclectic reading tastes, music and digging up interesting factoids. Been involved in environmental conservation and activism for years. Enjoy country walks, jogging, golf, fishing and kayaking, among other things. Travel to interesting and off the beaten track/wild places is a passion, though consciously now trying to cut carbon footprint by flying as little as possible.
