  • Description

I am Brom, a retired 67 year old currently based in the Netherlands. I am inspired by off grid life and have spent the best part of ten years off grid to some extent. At an off grid project in Amsterdam I built several structures from old pallets, including a compost toilet and a woodshed. My host has taken down her profile from the Workaway site, but she is more than happy to provide a reference.

This is my reference from the Wwoofing project: Off the Grid Collective -KasKantine, Amsterdam: "It is our great pleasure to write this reference for Brom...a great team player, skilled in building/construction, very helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, thoughtful and caring person. During 12 months volunteering Brom has managed to complete a lot of projects which they set as goals, such as making a second compost toilet, building a room for our compost system, and renovating food storage. Brom has also performed a wide range of things in our projects, not only working on construction which is their specialty. Whenever we need help, Brom is always willing to give us a hand like fixing so many bikes which made so many people very happy and a harmonious relationship they maintained with us all along, all of us found Brom easy to work with. Brom was a great addition to our team. We believe Brom will be a great and helpful worker wherever they go."

I have revisited this project since for several weeks each time. I have spent time Wwoofing at the Greenman project in Dalfsen, Wijbosch, Middelburg, several months in Verden, a year in Hamburg, Germany, a year on a Danish island and many others.

In practical terms, I think and hope I have made a useful contribution to all the projects I have participated in over the course of the last few years, but perhaps the most important lesson is that I continue to realise my own potential and have the courage to put it into practice. I think Workaway, Wwoof, etc., offer wonderful win-win opportunities and I can't wait for my next challenge!

All the projects I have been part of are community projects, but as I get older, I'm equally happy to be alone and I love to spend my free time walking (sometimes long distances) and clearing any rubbish I come across along the way from beaches, river(banks), mountainsides, pathways, etc. I hope to leave this world in a better state than it is now.
