Hello!

I'm Ali, a Brazilian/Portuguese citizen based in Edinburgh, UK.

I am a musician and social worker in my final year of the Bachelor's program and will begin my master's in September. During my holidays, I hope to take part in a workaway opportunity.

I love helping and being useful. I believe we are all intertwined in some way, like one whole organism working in its complexity. Then, when I am “supporting” someone, I am supporting myself. That vision really sets things up for me. Therefore, I try to be as helpful as I can to everyone.

I am comfortable working outdoors, with land and animals, and can help with childcare, cooking, painting, and general housework.

About my diet, I am a vegetarian. I am more than happy to cook my own food.

I am more introverted and need some time alone to recharge. Though what calls my attention in the workaway experience is exactly the connection aspect.

For a workaway placement, I would appreciate a small private accommodation, such as a private room, a tent, or a caravan.

My interests are self-development in general, including spirituality, philosophy, psychology, the arts, a healthy lifestyle, and community work. Nature is my happy place.

I had my first workaway experience last year in a farm in Andalusia. It was a very transformative experience, especially in the challenging aspects. I could learn so much about myself, about living with others, and especially about the sacred power of adjusting ourselves to nature.

I took some time to write this review, but the need to do so has always been on my mind.

I had a short but unbelievably meaningful time at Marianne’s finca. The first thing I need to say is that the biggest highlight of the experience is getting to know Marianne and her devotion to her earth. In a kind of symbiosis, they strive and thrive… read more together. It is very hard to see Marianne as an “old lady” through her so brave and witty self. A huge inspiration about how nature and humans are meant to grow together. Another highlight was the place itself and its isolation. The closest “pueblo” is a 20-minute walk from there, a place where you can buy small groceries, enjoy a lovely local pub, and feel the charming atmosphere of Andalucia's mountain villages. You can also take a bus to other towns from there. However, there are very few buses. At the finca, we have a rustic open-air kitchen, an open-air shower, and a compostable toilet. I stayed in a caravan, and the other volunteer stayed in a nice big tent. That environment has a huge effect on the psyche of someone who used to live in a frantic big city. It is hard to picture this. We adjust ourselves to another speed and needs. Wake up early, have a strong breakfast, get ready for the farm work with the boiling Andalusia sun during the summer, make lunch, keep yourself safe at the warmest hours, go for a walk in the mountains when the sun allows, then make your dinner, and go sleep; it is a kind of a disruption with the routine of many of us through the daily rat race we live in.

Difficulties emerged as well, and they were equally meaningful. I had some communication issues with Marianne, which were quickly resolved. I needed to move from where I was to an improvised room in Marianne’s house because new volunteers were arriving at the last minute. That, initially, made me uncomfortable in many ways. I am a way more introverted person, and I was looking for experience in a calm social environment. Initially, I felt anxious about it. I was also very comfortable in the caravan I was in, which was very private. Though I understood that the new volunteers were about to stay for the long term, and that was important to Marianne. In a hugely ironic way, I got along with the new people ridiculously well. The guys were a very heartwarming part of my experience. I was so glad for the opportunity to get to know them! Life is very funny, isn’t it?

Marianne takes care of their helpers very responsibly by providing plenty of food, accommodating special diets, setting fair working hours, offering lifts to the closest town, and always inviting them to explore Andalusia during free days.

That experience was really a self-learning event in so many ways, especially through the ordinary difficulties. Thank you, Marianne, for this opportunity. I feel I returned from this as a better, more conscious person.
