Description
Dear Reader,
I'm called Shándi. I was born and grown up in Hungary but in the past few years i have been staying and living in Holland, Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland too. I used to feel like moving a lot and enjoyed nomadic lifestyle even in my home country. That meant that i wasn't sticking around anywhere longer than half a year usually. Although I think it is not really important where i am from rather the experiences i have had and what i chose to do in my life. I look at myself as a spiritual being.
Today (since 1,5 years) i have found my home and community in Hungary at a land restoration and festival venue project. Finally i'm growing some roots which i think was important in this phase of my life.
I've begun volunteering as a Greenpeace activist in 2013 and found myself in harmony when i made myself useful in synchronicity with a team of people who have shared the same purpose and they joined their forces in order to create something impactful. I think volunteering is a movement and it really connects the people. We have an old hungarian word 'kaláka' which is a concept of always helping your surrounding community (for food and a place to sleep) which naturally brings that they will probably help you out as well when you are in need. It's like building good karma.
In april of 2019 i made the decision that i was going to live a low eco-footprint nomadic and off grid lifestyle traveling by bicycle which that time meant to me that I would not use money or fuel if not totally unavoidable and started my bicycle journey in Holland to a permaculture farm. Many things happened after that and i volunteered at a handful of places. For 2 years, i did not use money only if it was unavoidable.
Today, at my community project i earn a living as a gardener and maintenance person. In the garden, especially focusing on water habitats and trees - i take care of a pond that is not too small and we have 2 bigger lakes that we are regenerating already. I'm really into studying water plants, invertebrates and fish. I have started to build an aquaponic project that i want to use as a lab where i can showcase endangered hungarian fish and aquatic plant species. Basically a water lab to study the aquatic world and enrich biodiversity locally. For this project, i don't have sufficient finances atm so i decided to find a job through workaway for the winter time ('25. december - '26. february). I especially would love to go to Iceland or The Faroese islands or Finland, but i haven't visited Norway or Sweden neither yet which attracts me a lot as well.
I'm interested in visiting and learning from indigenous people and other Earth Restorers in my life - the people who have the wisdom and knowledge of how to live peacefully on the land, how to guard the land and how to maintain harmony with nature. So discovering elderly knowledge excites me a lot. Wisdom and stories of shamans, indigenous people or anyone who came to big (or small : ) realizations in their lives.
I have a daily sitting meditation (taoist zuowang) practice which i am open to share with others.
Lately i am grateful for silence and solitude just as much as i am grateful for good company. I like meeting open minded people to exchange skills and knowledge or wonder about life together.
We are all different and find different things important so I think communication is key to make co-operation smooth between people. I generally prefer long therm stays (1-3-6 months) so i can get to know the place and the people around in a peaceful and calm pace.
Some of the projects i engaged in since 2019.
In 2019 on that first farm (called de Wij) in Holland i served 7 months and we had small construction projects (like building a shed), we were caring for a food forest, doing some gardening and i was also cooking vegetarian meals weekly.
In the beginning 2020 i traveled to Switzerland and took part in an eco-community called Smala for 4 months. There i learned about joinery work and also made 2 mosaic art on walls. With a qualified joiner we made furnitures and handrails and other wooden structures like boxes for trash bins. So i basically measured, cut and sanded wood materials with power tools but i also constructed structures under supervision.
After Smala i traveled close to Bern, Switzerland to join a healing center called Inslot.
https://inslot.ch
At this place a group of psychologists and therapists were working together to help people with different psychological challenges like depression, border line or being burnt out. I served there for 8 months as a maintenance person doing gardening, cooking, fixing things and renovating.
In 2021 i traveled to Hungary to spend some time with family and friends. In the summer time i worked and volunteered on festivals like setting up big bedouin tents, building small constructions or cooking. At times i was not on festivals i was making a living from gardening and helping to renovate loam houses.
In September 2022 i flew to Iceland to the country i was dreaming about experiencing for many years. I was working as a vegetarian cook in a bistro in Seydisfjördur for a short amount of time and then I took part in a WorkAway project, helping a family rebuilding a house in the south of Iceland (Fagurholsmyri). After that i worked a little in a hotel in house keeping to earn some money.
On these journeys I would like to work on myself and help/support our planet's ecosystem holistically, human wise and nature wise since in the end we are all inhabitants of the same planet which provides us with everything we need.
2023 in may i left Iceland, and participated in a workshop on making shakuhachi flute out of a piece of bamboo with John Kaizan Neptune and then learned with masters from Japan for 5 days (14th International Shakuhachi Festival). In the summer i helped and volunteered on 4 international festivals, where i took part in trash management, and building as well.
Shakuhachi has been a very important practice to me since 2020, and i keep learning the art of playing and making shakuhachi flutes.
(2024) Not long after i have found the community project where i live now. I have made a decision that i will find a commitment and keep on going with it for some time. I found that i wanted to deepen my knowledge on permaculture and land restoration. When i was searching for a place to learn, i found my new home Manas Garden, our festival venue, community and land regeneration project.
I have been traveling communas and ecofarms, alternative communities since may of 2019 to learn about a sustainable, healthy way of life.

I learn about ecosystem restoration/permaculture design/ecological farming, and i learn and practice gardening and all ways that enable us to live by nature in the most respectful way making the least harmful impacts. I am interested in being able to create most necessities that me or my community needs. I learn about plants, trees and the soil so maybe i can take care of your plants and trees or maybe start up a little food forest - i usually get along well with animals as well. I continuously learn as a cook, one of my strength is baking granola. Hopefully in the near future i learn to bake great sourdough bread and pizza.
I have about 1 year experience in stable work (half a year in a horse riding school in Denmark and half a year on a hobby horse farm in Hungary), where i was feeding horses and cleaning their boxes mainly or escorting them to the fields/back to their boxes.
I can cook - I have been cooking for groups on a weekly basis before, vegan and vegetarian meals. I am not a vegetarian I accept to eat meat from time to time. I am also open to learn to cook with meat especially if it is locally sourced or from your own production.
I have been also helping around on music festivals as a builder/decorator, photographer and was hosting and showing around DJs/artists.
I am good at writing and communicating in english and i like documenting things.
I have spent some time in renovation work, fixing stuff, using power tools around the house, working with wood (some joinery and carpentry experience).
What can i do specifically? Ask me in a message!
