Our empowerment center is a club under a Swedish NPO in Trujillo, Peru.
Education is important for everyone. Therefore, we offer our children and women free education through activite and fun workshops to enable them to have a better today and future.
It is one of the most important means of empowering our women and children with
the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to participate fully
in the development process of our world.
Huanchaco is a beautiful surf district North of Peru with a great vibe. Just a couple of minutes up to the mountain behind the church in Huanchaco is a little community named Cerrito De La Virgen. The area is a very low income district with no running water or electricity in most houses. Some of the kids do not go to school because of their private situations.
For our school to be present in this area the kids are more than excited to come over and have fun with us a couple of days a week.
We are an organization that started on the 14 january 2013.
NORMALLY we offer 2 days a week of workshops for the children
- Mondays and Wednesdays 4pm to 6 pm.
We also have a women's project that meets two days a week for workshops and craft production
- Mondays and Wednesdays 4pm to 6 pm.
Sometimes we offer writing and reading classes for the women 1 day a week
-Mondays 2-3 pm
The classes are English, meditation, Yoga, health/environmental awareness, arts and crafts and whatever skills classes the volunteers come with.
We normally teach Ages 6-18 but sometimes teach other age groups from 3-7 years.
We are also looking for independant volunteers who would be able to take the older kids on different activity classes like:
During summer which is mid december to end of february we offer all our classes in the evenings, 2 days a week to all age groups.
Our main goals of the project
- Keep the kids off of the streets
- Give them the right to be kids, even if it is for an hour a day, by taking them out from their homes where they have big responsibilities.
- Educate them -learning different skills and English will open so many doors for the children in the future to give them better opportunities.
- Simply learn by having fun!
The women's group consists of 6-12 women each meeting and is one of the more challenging projects. We have started a social enterprise with these women and during our meetings we meet to make recycled jewelry and knitted products. These products are sold in Peru, Sweden, and the U.S. to provide a salary for the women that partcipate to support their families.
The volunteers are responsible for collecting the products, keeping record of each product, representing the women, and creating a fun and stable environment.
With it being a very new project, starting in January 2014, there is still a lot of groundwork that needs to be done. It is important that the volunteers who come are advanced in Spanish, patient, culturally open, and are flexible. It takes time to build trust and stable relationships with the women in this community.
Hours: 12-15 hours a week for all our projects together
Goals of Women's Group
-Create a stable and safe environment for the women
-Help the women understand their worth, value, and talent
-Represent the women and create a unified community
-Create a sustainable environment for the women to support themselves and their families
-Have educational workshops of cooking, nutrition, health, arts and crafts, and self-love
