A winding coastal road leads toward a serene beach and rolling hills at sunset. Dramatic orange sky glows above the ocean, creating a tranquil, picturesque scene.
Two small modern buildings sit near a sandy, curved coastline. Green shrubs, a hill, blue sky, and ocean waves create a peaceful, natural beachside scene.
Two small green cabins sit side by side on grassy land, with a picnic table, bicycle, and fire pit in front, under a partly cloudy sky.
Two seals rest on a sandy beach under a cloudy sky. One seal yawns widely while the other lies calmly beside, with waves in the background.
A dramatic, dark roll cloud stretches across the sky above a calm ocean. The moody, grey atmosphere suggests an impending storm, with tranquil water below.

    Description

Kia ora koutou. We are a family of four with a coastal vegetation restoration project on our beach side farm at Smaill’s Beach Dunedin. We have been chipping away at our project for a decade or so. If we had a hand, we’d get there quicker! The aim is to re-vegetate about five hectares of land adjacent to the beach, in particular to provide habitat for native birds (including penguins) and a recovering population of New Zealand sea lions. Where we live is beautiful and wild. Our house is small so we’ve built self contained accomodation for visitors, right in the middle of our restoration project and one minutes walk from the beach. Smaill’s Beach gets good surf and lots of sea lions over summer and is close to the other surf beaches and good stuff of Dunedin, NZ. Dunedin is one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets. An old city in a stunning location with a big university and all sorts of stuff going on. Plenty to do and see from your base at Smaill’s Beach!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Because of the self contained accomodation, cultural exchange would be largely general chit chat with a Kiwi family and mostly during periods of work. We’re happy to show surfers around some of the local waves and always keen for a coffee or a cup of tea.

    Help

We need help during spring and early summer weed releasing the native plants we have been planting for our vegetation restoration project. This is a job done by hand, no evil chemicals or nasty machines involved.

    What else ...

This stay would really suit surfers! Dunedin is a surfers Mecca. There are waves at our beach and we are close to a range of other waves. Plan your day around what the surf is doing. Lots of other stuff to do in and around Dunedin. Wildlife, cafes, bush walking, art galleries, historic buildings etc. A great little city in a beautiful location with lots on offer. Our place is in the country just outside town. 15 minutes by car to the city centre or catch the bus, nearest stop 15 minutes walk.
