  • Description

Hello! We are a small hostel in Flores, Guatemala run by a young couple from Guatemala and the US. We are looking for volunteer help with some special projects as well as a long term manager (paid position).

Our hostel has a 9 bed dormitory and 1 private room, and we live on site as well. The best part of the house is our big tropical garden, which is the only one like it on Flores. Our vibe is eclectic, artsy, and relaxed, and most of our guests are budget backpackers who are easy going and want a quiet place to sleep at night. We are social, but not a party hostel. We love chatting with our guests and try to get to know each one a little bit and help make their trip as easy, enjoyable, and affordable as we can! In general, we try to create an atmosphere where every guest is greeted with a smile and asked about their day when they come in, and we try to be as helpful as possible in answering questions or providing any special services they request. We are small, fairly new, and not fancy, so connection with the guests is the best service we can provide and its how we create satisfied guests and positive reviews. Its ideal if a volunteer can help contribute to this, even make friends and hang out with the guests in their free time :)

Flores itself is a charming little island on Lake Peten Itza with cozy streets and beautiful sunsets over the water. It serves as a major hub for travelers visiting Tikal or crossing between Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize. There are tons of restaurants here with delicious food and bars where you can relax or meet locals & tourists. Nearby, you can cross the water in a quick boat ride and visit San Miguel for nature walks, wild monkeys, and swimming, or walk over the bridge into Santa Elena for the bustling marketplace. Tuk tuks are everywhere for easy & cheap transportation, and you can catch public buses to explore other parts of Peten, like El Remate.

PLEASE READ the available positions below and specify what you are applying for when you contact us!

We are always looking to brighten up the hostel with more artwork and creative touches. If you are an artist, builder, crafter, person with a creative mind to share with us, we would love to hear your ideas! In the past, volunteers have painted murals, made dreamcatchers, constructed garden sculptures out of random items, made decorative collages...there are lots of possibilities, so let us know what your skills are, include some photos of your artwork or send a link to your website, and we will discuss a possible project together :)

We want some basic outdoor furniture, wooden benches and tables, and maybe some chairs for indoors. We can discuss more details when you contact us!

We are looking for people who are friendly, positive, flexible, and responsible. We speak English and Spanish, so fluency in either one is okay. Please note that while interacting with guests is not a specific job, its great if you can talk to guests, be friendly, and help them feel welcome!

PAID POSITION - HOSTEL MANAGER WANTED - 6 month minimum commitment :)

We are seeking a hostel manager! This is a paid position. We already have 1 manager working with us and we are looking for one more person to complete the team. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to gain experience managing a small business internationally.

Responsibilities: run the daily operations of the hostel, including greeting guests, creating a welcoming and warm environment, arranging tours and transportation for guests, managing reservations and online booking platforms, handling payments, maintaining positive working relationships with established driver/tour contacts. Our hostel is small (11 person capacity) and the working atmosphere is relaxed, so this is not a high stress job, but requires commitment and ongoing supervision. You will also help with serving clients in the cafe, which is very small and offers smoothies, coffee, homemade ice cream, and some baked goods (all vegan).

Schedule: please be aware that this job requires you to be flexible with your schedule to meet guest needs. Most of the work is concentrated in the afternoon and evening when guests are arriving, and generally mornings and midday are free time. However, online communication from guests or new reservations come throughout the day and need to be handled as they arise. The schedule will fluctuate with the season as well as the day, so we will discuss with you a schedule that is good for all parties (you, the business, and us), which may include a set day off in the week or for example, an arrangement of 1 month work and 1 week off. We love to travel and are happy to make a schedule that allows longer breaks for traveling as well, especially during low seasons.

We are looking for someone with the following qualities:
Speaks conversationally fluent English & Spanish
    Previous hospitality experience
Friendly and upbeat, enjoys interacting with guests
Self-motivated and organized, able to manage your own workload and show initiative
    Honest, trustworthy, & reliable
Able to commit a minimum of 6 months
    Works well with others
We would work a period of time together to make sure you are prepared, then leave you alone to manage things while we focus on another business venture. We would be always available for assistance by phone, but it’s crucial that the manager can work independently.
To maintain the proper atmosphere of our hostel, we respectfully request that managers refrain from flirtation and/or sex with our guests. There are several other hostels and some bars nearby that are great for meeting people if you feel so inclined.

Compensation: A base salary plus a commission based on sales, averaging between Q3000-4000 monthly and up depending on performance. We offer free accommodation, use of our personal kitchen, shared bathroom, use of all hostel facilities. You will share a bedroom with 1 other manager or volunteer, or be alone, depending on the current staff needs.

Interested? Please contact us and tell us some details about yourself, your qualifications, and dates you are available. After speaking over email, we would like to do a video interview as the next step. If all goes well, we will invite you for a 2 week probation period (unpaid) so we can meet in person and ensure everyone is satisfied with the arrangement before moving to a long term commitment. Due to the need to meet in person before making a formal job offer, this job is best suited to applicants who are already traveling somewhat nearby or at least planning to travel in Central America or Mexico.

One of the owners is from Guatemala, so you can practice Spanish and learn about Guatemalan life with him. Flores is a fairly modern place geared towards tourists with some original residents still living here, and the surrounding towns are where most locals live, so you can see a variety of ways of life within a small area. You will also meet many tourists from various parts of the world--we frequently have guests from Argentina, France, Germany, Mexico, Australia, even as far a Singapore, so you have the opportunity to meet people of diverse backgrounds from all over the world.

Volunteers: You will receive free accommodation in a very basic private room, with mattresses on the floor, fan, and shelves for storing your belongings, which may be shared with 1 other volunteer or manager. You can also use the shared bathrooms with hot water shower, common room indoors, large tropical garden outdoors with hammocks, free wifi, and free drinking water.

Food is not included, but there are many delicious restaurants on the island and you are welcome to use our kitchen (this is not shared with guests). There is a market nearby where you can get plenty of cheap food. The only request we have is that we would prefer to not have meat prepared in the kitchen as we are vegans.

Other perks: you can do your laundry for free with the washer and dryer. We will arrange a Tikal tour for you at the lowest price possible (waiving commission, but you still have to pay normal park entrance fee and transport base cost), as well as your transportation to your next destination.

We want you to feel at home while you are staying with us! We don't have too much to offer yet as we are new, but we are happy to share whatever we have :)

    What else ...

In your time off, you can visit the tourist spots around Peten, including Tikal, Yaxha, Actun Kan Caves, Las Arcas animal reserve, El Remate, Crater Azul, and the San Miguel beach, rope swing, & mirador. You can also relax in a hammock with your favorite hobby, chat with us or the guests, shop in the market or huge thrift store nearby, play with our kitten, go swimming, do yoga on our platform with sunset views....there's many ways to enjoy your time here!

If you are learning Spanish, there is an excellent school right across the street from us and we can help you arrange classes.

On the weekends, there are lots of bars open and a few clubs for dancing, but generally Flores is not a destination for partying--everything closes by 1am on Saturday. If you want to have a drink and a nice conversation while you watch the sunset over the water, that's more the vibe :) In the hostel, we are flexible based on the feeling of the guests at the time, but due to early tour times, we usually have guests going to bed early and try to have quiet hours inside the house around 10pm or so.
