ASK - the gathering 2019 was a great success – let’s do it again!
ASK - the gathering 2020 will take place from Wednesday the 24th of June till Sunday the 28th of June 2020. (NB: volunteers and organizers will start preparing and living at the site one day before, i.e. as from Tuesday the 23rd of June already.)
The festival is a gathering for people who are interested in self-directed learning, i.e. mostly for families who are unschooling, homeschooling or worldschooling. The festival is organized around the experience of living in a community village where every one of the 200 participants is a cocreator. A village needs many facets to feel like a village and any skill or charm that the villagers may have and share is part of the creation. The result is a six day long wonderful experience of union, team work, connection, fun, curiosity, exploration, expansion, learning, creativity and play in one of the most beautiful gems of Danish nature: the island of Bornholm.
The festival is created and organized by a team of three enthusiastic mums who are passionate about both self-directed learning and community building. The idea for the festival arose from the three mum’s awareness of the fact that many families – especially those who choose a life where familiy members are connected instead of separated – are longing for community, and that’s why they decided to take action and make a difference by creating "ASK - a gathering for self-directed learners".
And while the three mums are a wonderfully efficient and creative team for organising the event, they know that ASKing for help is magic in life and the true source of connection, and that’s why, beyond the co-creating villagers, the festival will need a bunch of extra hands, supportive souls, strong arms, flexible minds, spontaneous solution finders, welcoming souls, energy wells and much more. Maybe you want to be one of them?
The tasks will include things like welcoming the villagers, helping with the preparation of the three daily vegan meals and snacks and with everything practical around the meals as well as doing some cleaning and tidying the activity zones, assisting and supporting the villagers and activity leaders, taking part in arranging the festival party, creative projects and probably a number of very various other things. Also, we would like you to arrive at least one day before in order to set up everything together with us, so that as much as possible is prepared when our participants arrive, and we can focus on being here and now and creating the most amazing festival.
What can we offer you?
*️️️️️️️️️️ Being part of a wonderful team and an amazing festival. Meeting inspiring, open-minded, creative and unique people of different cultures and ages, where all of them are respected and valued. You will have the opportunity of getting to know many different cultures, languages and people since the participating families come from various countries, with children from 0 years to teenagers, speaking a large number of different languages (last year it was around 15 languages).
*️️️️️️️️️ Living in community where everybody contributes. We will cook our own food, so for every meal, there will be a team of villagers and volunteers. A wonderful chance to connect with others, to do something together, to share things as a community and to have a lot of fun.
*️️️️️️️️️️ Having enriching conversations, living in a supportive community, enjoying the beautiful nature, the silence and the fun activities, making new friends, sharing meals, dancing, music, laughter and much more.
*️️️️️️️️️️ Experiencing union and team work within the volunteer group, facilitated by special activities and lounge for volunteers.
*️️️️️️️️️️ Always having the volunteer coordinator to turn to for support, advice or a great high-five.
*️️️️️️️️️️ Free vegan food for the time of the festival incl. the prep day (Tuesday-Sunday).
*️️️️️️️️️️ Free accommodation in a shared tent with the other volunteers. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own tent or camping van.
*️️️️️️️️️️ If you come without a car, we can offer you transportation from and to the closest busstop, alternatively from/to the ferry.
What do we expect from you?
*️️️️️️️️️️ To support us from Tuesday the 23rd of June around mid-day till Sunday the 28th of June 2020 around mid-day for about 5 hours per day with the above mentioned tasks.
*️️️️️️️️️️ It is important that you are flexible, open minded, bring positive energy and like to be and communicate with people.
*️️️️️️️️️️ If you have any passions or interests that is suitable and that you'd like to share, you are so welcome to offer a workshop or activity.
*️️️️️️️️️️ It is important to us that you don't have small kids, so that you are truly available and flexible. All villagers will also be asked to contribute and to be part of everything from meal preparation and cleaning to offering activities, but since many of them have small kids we do need some people that are reliable and not dependent on anybody but themselves – our wonderful volunteers!
* We hope that you like teamwork and being social and would like to share (some of) your spare time connecting with the other volunteers and villagers, as we of course also respect your boundaries and needs.
And now we are very much looking forward to your application!
Julie – the volunteer coordinator

Elisabeth, Marie & Rebecca – the mums behind the festival
PS: There might be a few dogs accompanying their families to the festival. However, we are very clear in communicating that not everyone is comfortable around dogs, that the safety and comfort of all participants are of highest importance, and that only dogs who are ok around children and lots of people are permitted. Our experience is that dog owners are very good in talking responsability, and that the present dogs have added lots of value to many participants.
Smoking is allowed outdoors only. At last year's festival nobody smoked, as far as we have noticed.
Babysitting / child care
Cooking / shopping
Help in the house
You will be surrounded by a wonderful, international mix of people, with a common passion about living with children with respect and dignity as well as for learning with joy and outside of school.
Help with and around meals, preparations, cleaning, activities etc. at our festival for self-directed learners. Food will be provided for free for all volunteers.
The volunteer group will be communicating in English and it is therefore important that you understand and speak English
Shared sleeping room with the other volunteers (max. 8), or you can bring your own tent or camping van. Please bring your own sheets, pillow and sleeping bag!
You are so welcome to - and we hope that you will like to - join in with the festival. Participate in the activities, play with us, share meals with us, discover and learn, ask and discuss, dance and laugh. However, there is also beautiful nature, woods, beaches and the sea, so if you want some quiet time there are lots of places to enjoy. Otherwise, the festival area is not directly close to any towns or shops, but we believe that for the duration of the gathering, you will have plenty of life around you anyway.
If you want to take advantage of already being on this beautiful and diverse island, there are many amazing and pictoresque sites that we can recomment to pay a visit such as the forest of Almindingen, Ekkodalen, Hammershus, the artisan town of Gudhjem and much more!
