    Description

We are a 501(c) (3) non profit organization that advances the health and well being of dogs and cats in Santa Cruz La Laguna, Solola, Guatemala.
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Sololá, Guatemala, you can find our animal society, fueled by a heartfelt vision to transform the lives of stray dogs and cats and with the hopeful aspiration of establishing the town’s very first veterinary clinic.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Atitlan, our village is a tapestry of culture and tradition, home to the Kaqchikel indigenous Mayan community. Despite its beauty, many of our four-legged friends find themselves without a home, wandering in search of shelter and a kind hand.

Our mission is clear: to curb the tide of unwanted dogs and cats by empowering the community and providing essential sterilization and veterinary services to those most in need. We dream of a Santa Cruz La Laguna where each animal is cherished, and every wagging tail speaks of love and compassion.

At the core of our work is a steadfast commitment to advancing the safety and well-being of animals. We focus on identifying critical needs, community education and advocating for animals.

The traveller will work with a Mayan family while at our place and with other local volunteers during our sterilization clinic. Our volunteers and workers are Mayan descendants and local community members of Santa Cruz La Laguna. It will be a true cultural exchange. You will have an opportunity to learn a bit of the Santa Cruz La Laguna’s indigenous Mayan language, Kaqchikel.

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for one or two volunteers at a time to help us with the following projects:

We have a small dog rescue sanctuary-about 10 dogs. We need help caring for the dogs, teaching them basic commands, walking them, helping us getting them adopted by creating videos and taking pictures of them for our social media and potential adopters, and help us with our once a month sterilization clinic. Our dogs were street dogs and a few were born on site because we rescued a pregnant dog-mother. Our dogs are friendly, but could greatly benefit from dog training. The ideal candidate MUST love dogs, be a team player, friendly and easy to work with as the volunteer will be working with the Mayan family who takes care of the property and our dogs.

Please note that we would like to meet you first. We'll have a 2-3 day trial to see if our cooperation will work out well for both of us. We prefer non-smokers, easygoing people who are more interested in doing a peaceful Workaway rather than partying.

    What else ...

You can reach us by boat from Panajachel in approximately 20 minutes. It's a 20 minute walk to the center of Santa Cruz, where you can find a local market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, an ATM, some places to get a drink with a nice view and some small stores. If you need anything else you can take a boat to Panajachel, where you can find big supermarkets. If you'd like to socialize with fellow travelers you can get a drink at two nearby hostels. Please drink responsibly, as we are not looking for volunteers who like to party a lot. Nearby you can also find a couple of the most beautiful, scenic walks.

We are nestled in the vibrant heart of Lake Atitlan, Santa Cruz La Luguna, Solola, Guatemala. Its a lakefront property ideally for sunrise views and for swimming! There's a lot to do at Lake Atitlan as it has 12 towns surrounding the lake, each, with its own personality.
