  • Description

I am British and left England in 1972. I built this house as of 1981. It contains a small guest house, my music venue with a capacity of around 500 and a permanent art collection. It has been the location for movies such as the incredible hulk and music clips of snoop dogg, pharrell williams and black eyed peas. I live with my wife and daughter lucy (14) and son eric (12). we assist other community projects (we do not publicise). I am a retired film maker and bbc tv correspondent.

Previous visitors have learned portuguese, had capoeira classes, stayed on teaching english and in a couple of cases ended up in our band. Some have even moved to Brazil. Right now Brazil is in an economic decline

The exterior walls will be covered with mosaic made from broken tiles. Design ideas may be mine or yours. Also, if you are a jazz musician you will be able to join in with our once-a-month jazz night.Tthis is probably good for art student on holiday or leaving, but not exclusivley so. This could also be extended to a group of around 6 friends who could be given our dormitory with own bathroom. It is my family's house and also a cultural centre receiving some paying guests. We are situated in a small and wonderfully friendly favela overlooking guanabara bay and the sugar loaf. Volunteers will get a huge breakfast served by us every morning and will have a kitchen in which they may cook other snacks or meals. There are also cheap bars in our street where a meal out can be had for around us$3-5. We are right next to brazil's swat hq, so this is a comletely safe location. There is a van live up and down our hill 6am to 11pm. For legal reasons only, we have to disallow the use of drugs inside the house. Smoking cigarettes is ok with the usual consideration for others.

THIS IS A SMALL VERY FRIENDLY AND TOLERANT COMMUNITY and we are a very active part of it. We make 2 observations to help you fit in.
First, workaways, visitors for short periods, should avoid intimate relationships with locals in the community which might cause unexpected friction.
2nd, while there is total religious freedom in the community, female iconic muslim clothing is best avoided (if you feel unable to fit in, then please try an altermative).

UPDATE: We've had great success with workaways on our mosaic project (ongoing). many came for a few weeks and stayed months, or travelled onand returned. Now I'd like to find a writer willing to take on a long term project (biography)

Our dormitory has 9 beds and its own bathroom. We can receive individuals or we can close the dorm for an exclusive group of around 6 friends. There is plenty of common space including the main salon with wi-fi or two verandas overlooking the bay. We expect visitors to keep the room and the guest kitchen fit for everyone's use. We provide laundered sheets and towels, and soap. Personal laundry is done at the local launderette next door (not ours). Volunteer space will not be available during august 2016, new year celebrations or carnival.

Rio is blessed with wonderful beaches and the atlantic forest. At nights there are many music venues downtown which is a just about walkable distance. Is also possible to make extended weekend trips to ilha grande or the historic town of parati. Drinks at our bar are self service and you keep your own tab.
