Her home is a true work of art. For someone like me, who’s not used to living in such a unique environment, it was an incredible discovery. Surrounded by greenery, the house offers a deep sense of peace. If you're looking to escape the noise and chaos of the city, this is the perfect place.
The garden is huge and absolutely stunning—probably the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. When the weather is good, spending your afternoons there relaxing after work is pure bliss.
Catherine often hosts more than one Workawayer, which is definitely a plus: it’s the perfect opportunity to meet new people, socialize daily, and discover other cultures in addition to the Irish one. I personally had the pleasure of meeting Cindy, a girl from France, and I’m grateful for the beautiful moments we shared together.
If one of your goals is to improve your English, there’s no better place. Catherine always helped me by gently correcting my mistakes, and there are countless opportunities for long, engaging conversations with her and her friends. Plus, if you manage your time well, you’ll have plenty of space to study on your own.
Catherine is full of energy and involved in so many activities. She always invited me to join her: we went to the pub with her friends, where I met amazing people with fascinating stories; we had a gardening party where the house was filled with wonderful guests to work and talk with—it was truly unforgettable. We also went to church, and I got to try bell ringing for the first time—something I found surprisingly fascinating.
In addition to all that, Catherine constantly suggested new things to do, both with her and independently, and she often offered me lifts by car to explore the area.
The work mainly involves gardening. I was lucky to enjoy warm, sunny days and spent a lot of time outdoors. Every task was explained clearly and thoroughly by Catherine, who often worked alongside us. The working hours were always respected—five hours a day—and Catherine made sure we never went beyond that, which I really appreciated.
I never had any difficulties with the tasks, and I always had fun while learning a lot. By the end of the month, thanks to her guidance, I had gained knowledge that I’m sure will be useful in the future.
I’m probably forgetting something—of course, something positive—because honestly, there were no negative aspects at all.
I want to sincerely thank Catherine for welcoming me into her home and making this unforgettable experience possible. You’ll always have a place in my heart, and I hope I managed to return even a fraction of the kindness you showed me.
I highly recommend this experience to anyone reading this review. For me, it was incredibly important and played a key role in my personal growth.

I felt welcomed and at home since the moment I arrived, the house is beautiful and the atmosphere is lovely. Catherine is an amazing host, a great chef and most of all an extremely interesting person who loves to listen to others as well as to share her (sometimes crazy!) experiences; she involves workawayers in her everyday life as much as she can, allowing them to really see and be part of the local irish culture.

… read more managed supplies and time economically and respectfully, reviving old paint brushes, mixing paints and using my exhisting supplies. As an artist she understands colour and how to mix in order to achieve a particular tone or shade.
She also drew up plans for the design of 2 kitchens for my cottages....I was so thrilled with this as her design eye found some very creative solutions to design dilemmas that I had been grappling with. The younger volunteers learned a lot from her ability to guide and plan their work. In addition to prepping, painting, staining, varnishing, mending, organising, designing, guiding, teaching, she grouted tiles in the bathroon.
It was very special to have hosted Zenda, we had some great chats and fun hanging out together and I shall be eternally grateful for all that I have learned from her.

You can do gardening as well and tasks are always varied.
Catherine is welcoming, genourous and kind. You will experience rural Irish life and meet friendly neighbours. Catherine is involved in local arts as well as many other cultural interests, you are welcome to join in on her social activities.
Doneraile is a 45 min walk away. The town is small but has all the essentials. It is filled with historical buildings and has a beautiful park for walking. There are busses from here to Cork City and all the local areas.
Catherine is an excellent cook and has years of knowledge. She shares her wisdom as she skill fully puts together
one of her excellent meals.
The fridge is always stocked.

Staying at Catherine's house during the month of September has been a great experience. She is incredibly active and allows you to participate in everything around her. I loved meeting her friends from Doneraile, singers, actors, painters and many more. I was also able to interact with the community around St Mary's church where I was privileged
… read more to witness the historic moment of the restoration of the 7 bells (134 years old). She is a fantastic cook, I learnt a lot of tricks and how to make pancakes (my children are delighted). In the afternoons we had interesting chats over a nice cup of tea and milk which helped me to improve my English.
I was very lucky to meet Catherine's son with whom I was able to play long games of chess. As for the tasks I did in the mornings, they were diverse: helping to recycle the waste generated by the work on the reconstruction of the cottage, cutting weeds in the garden and in the vegetable garden, whitening the joints of the tiles in the toilets, painting windows, etc....
It has been a total immersion in an Irish family, where I have felt at home.
Catherine, as I told you, when you want to visit Barcelona, call me and I will cook you a special paella.

My stay with Catherine was a great experience, she is a warm and welcoming host and offered me such a wonderful introduction to the Ireland! They say time flies when you're having fun, and it certainly did here in Doneraile. It's a small 2 pub town, which is a short 30 mins walk from your beautiful picturesque accommodation.

So loved sharing the kitchen with her! The fridge and pantry are always stocked so you won't go hungry here! She is a warm and welcoming host, and flexible with expectations of work. I was able to enjoy touring Blarney Castle on a day she was volunteering there, which was such an amazing day!
You will never be bored here, keeping an 1843 home up and running requires general maintenance painting, gardening....the list will go on, but the energy , views and peacefulness of this place are so engaging, you won't want to leave! I had my own room, and the occasional warm shower, so if you are a cold dipper this place is for you! One tip I have, if you are visiting during the winter months, bring lots of warm clothes - the house is old and cold!
You will learn things here, Catherine is a keen environmentalist, and always looking to recycle, re-use, which I love! didn't know what a Fedge was, but with the help of another workawayer we built one! Lots of room on this beautiful property to have many more built, and wonderful peaceful surroundings to enjoy while doing it, so what's stopping you!

We worked in her garden, did a lot of strimming (or weed-wacking/edging for us Americans), painted, and some other projects. It was fun to have a lot of fresh stuff from her garden to eat as part of our meals. Catherine let us know if we needed to do something differently with a project or made it clear if she was happy with the work, and it was really helpful to have that feedback. The time I was there there was 1 other workawayer, with whom I got along very well.
The work was varied, and we did some gardening, painting (inside and outside) ,weeding , cleaning, strimming and other odd jobs.

Catherine is very flexible, accomodating and active.
Food was plentiful and Catherine is a great cook. In september there were loads of vegetables and fruits from the garden.
Catherine introduced us to her friends and brought us to different (community) events. We even dressed up as 18th century people twice!
I felt welcome and met lots of nice people.
It's about 30 min walk into town, and Catherine dropped us off at the station as well for day trips.
Catherine speaks clearly and not too fast , which is good if you are learning English.
There's usually more than 1 workawayer at the time, I think it could get a bit quiet otherwise. As Catherine has other things going on as well.

Ian showed great dedication and pride in whatever project he undertook and did a really good job. He is very loyal, responsible and trustworthy. He took care of the house while I went away for a period. Ian is a team player and got on very well with our other workawayers. He is easy to live with and keeps the place immaculately clean and undertakes household tasks very willingly. I found Ian to be both cheerful, funny, kind and generous and an all round good sport. It is these qualities that has endeared him to my friends and my community. He was always willing to get involved in community activities of the arts festival and take up opportunities to get involved in some local improvisational drama. It has been a very special experience to have shared my home with Ian and he will always have a special place in my heart and that of my friends.

Well, where do I start?!...
I was at Catherine's for just over 5 months and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. From the moment I got there everything seemed to click and I felt instantly at home. … read more off. We sang, we laughed, we cried, we ate wonderful food, we met lots of Catherine's friends and it was great to be part of the Doneraile community (oh and we also got some good work done too!)
Regarding the work there was a huge array of projects....ranging from gardening, planting vegetables, restoring old furniture, sanding, painting etc. Catherine created a great working environment for us all and certainly contributed to the 'team feel' which, for me, is of paramount importance whilst working.
Catherine also kindly took us to places on our days off and helped immerse us into the Art culture, both locally in Doneraile and further afield in Cork city.
The food at Catherine's was quite possibly the best I've had in my entire life! (no exaggeration!). We were also fortunate to avail of Antonio's wonderful Italian dishes from time to time so that was another treat, and he also taught me how to make fresh bread!
All in all just a wonderful experience. I picked up quite a lot of building knowledge whilst working here, which was an extra bonus for me.
I would thoroughly recommend doing workaway at Catherine's.

… read more it the month I was there. Also, even though I was there during the lockdown I had opportunities to meet some of his friends at small outdoor gatherings and barbecues in the garden. Their friendly environment is fantastic and only reinforces the idea of the beautiful person that Catherine is. If you are respectful, interested in gardening, ornamental or vegetable growing and you want to have a true Irish cultural experience, this is your place.
Catherine also took me to visit some nearby places in the car, beautiful parks and forests and even archaeological sites that coexist in this magnificent region of Cork. In that area there is no good internet signal, so do not think that you will be online all your free time.

… read more garden and for the needs of plants and has the capacity to work intelligently and independently. She takes such a pride in the work . Not only does she follows things through, she puts her heart and soul into it and has many creative ideas. She has taught me so many things from how to layer a fig tree to how to make my own eco friendly liquid detergent. She is a great cook and we have enjoyed some of her delicious dishes cakes and home made yogurt.
She loves cleaning so she kept the place immaculately.

Catherine is a lovely person who warmly welcomed us! We spent 3 weeks with her, the work was very interesting it was mostly gardening. We were able to enjoy the good weather and have lunch in the large garden. We shared breakfast and lunch with Catherine. She cooked for us and filled the fridge in a separate kitchen for us to cook dinner
… read more ourselves. We unfortunately stayed at Catherine's house during the lockdown and could not take advantage of the surroundings or meet the community of Catherine. But what is certain is that she seems to have a very lively social life and that it must be pleasant to share with her!
