Description
Hello,
We are Amelia and Adam and we would be your hosts. We have a farmhouse and woodland plot in East Lothian which we are making into a permaculture project. We are at the beginning of the process but the plot will have fruit and nut trees, vegetables and herb beds, bees, chickens and ducks. Our interests are sustainability, foraging, biodynamic gardening, herbalism, permaculture, surfing, yoga, holistic health, books, cultures, activism, design, cooking and just hanging out. Accommodation is in a rustic cabin on the land, or the guest room in the house depending on the season. Two week short stays are preferable rather than long term helping.
We moved here after many years of travel, working, volunteering, and learning and now we have a young family and are setting up life on the farm. We chose this spot because Adam is a surfer (it is close to the coast) and I’ve always wanted a wee bit of land after living on permaculture projects in Spain and Latin America. I was inspired a lot by Satish Kumar as a kid and we have wandered for a while and landed here, which is nice! The beaches and surrounding areas here are beautiful. Dunbar and North Berwick are within cycling distance. Belhaven is a great beginner surf spot and the beach and woodland at Tyninghame is wonderful for walking. Our plot is close to the city of Edinburgh too (25 mins by train) so you can enjoy the city too.
We welcome people who are happy being practical / doing physical help and who can ideally bring their skills to the table. In return we can share our space and a lot of experience. I’m a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh (English and the Sociology of Education) and Adam is a Biodynamic Cranial Osteopath. We have both travelled the world working as professionals but also volunteering on organic farms and as holistic health practitioners (yoga, osteo, massage, talking treatment). We’ve spent a lot of time enjoying life as well as working hard. We love meeting interesting people, and we are very open to hearing your story and learning from you.
Hope to see you soon,

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are a relatively skilled couple and can help you learn about sustainability, higher order thinking, foraging, biodynamic gardening, herbalism, permaculture, surfing, yoga, holistic health, books, cultures, activism, design, cooking. Language skills can be taught. The place is like a woodland secret garden so it's a pretty cool space to hang out in.
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Help
We welcome helpers to help with general land and property maintenance such as building and planting vegetable beds, making compost, chopping wood, weeding, lifting stones, planting trees, painting inside and outside, cutting hedges, cleaning decking, building/mending chicken coops, cooking meals and playing ball with small children (two busy boys).
We would like to exchange accommodation and food for five hours of help per day, five days per week. This gives the helpers 2 full days to enjoy the area. Ideally people would stay for two weeks. I can help improve your English while you stay if English is your non-native language.Languages
