Description
I am the Managing Director of a primary school. I am a Ugandan male aged 46, married . I am a teacher by profession, my wife is a teacher as well. The school is located in the Kasese district of Western Uganda. It is about 450km a way from Kampala the capital city of Uganda. The school was founded in 2014 after realizing the increased number of orphans and vulnerable children from the poor families in the Rwenzori Region.
Kasese District is one of the areas in Uganda that are still lagging behind in terms of social services. The Region was hit by the National Liberation of Uganda (NALU) of 1989 to 1990 and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) of 1996 to 2002, these were rebel groups which attacked the the region leaving people poor and helpless, as it set ablaze school, markets, killed people, abducted others, people lost their legs due to land mines, women were raped, and the spread of HIV/AIDS increased as people were displaced into camps, earning a living became a challenge and the young girls stared engaging in sex for money with the soldiers and well to do men for survival.
This has left a negative impact on the people in the region. Currently there families headed by children, aged people looking after grand children left by their parents.
The school was started to support, care and offer quality but affordable basic education to the disadvantaged children. Currently the school has 10 classes with an enrolment of 350 children both boys and girls. The disadvantaged children mentioned include the orphans, street kids, children living with HIV/AIDS, children living with disabilities and other vulnerable children from he poor rural families who can not afford to pay exorbitant fees in most schools in town.
Our aim is to increase accessibility of quality education to the children from poor families, so as to enable them compete favorably at local, national and international levels.
Both the School and the community Based organization are registered and legalized by the Government of the Republic Uganda, with experience of working together with the local people.
The school is is involved in offering education to orphans and vulnerable children. The school is run by a board of Directors comprised of four (4) people, Parents Teachers Association (PTA) comprised of eleven (11) people with a teaching staff of 15 teachers and non teaching staff of seven (7) people.
We are therefore writing to request for volunteers to come and stay with as for a period of time teaching children, visiting their homes, learning our culture as we learn from them. As the mother of the above school we have other programs like Agriculture for modern methods, credit and savings, empowering women and youth groups, Promotion of culture and Tourism, child care, health education and sanitation, so both volunteers in different activities are highly well come.Types of help and learning opportunities
