We are an English language school in the city of Chernivtsi, Ukraine (Western Ukraine, far away from the troubles in the East). The school is operated by an ex-Peace Corps volunteer who gives the students not only English lessons but also much-valued information about American culture. The position is to assist the students in mastering the English language primarily through conversation with an American native speaker. Local Ukrainian English teachers are responsible for the curriculum and organizing the classroom activities. The Workaway volunteer must engage the students in lively, interesting and fun conversations, under the direction of the classroom teacher.
Our school, Americana, is now beginning its third year of operation, and serve 350 students, including children, youth and adults. Our school is located in the historic city center on the major pedestrian/tourist street, in one of the historic Austrian-Hungarian buildings.
I have been in Ukraine for 5 years now, and much of what i know of Ukraine comes from the lively conversations we have during our classroom discussions. I have had many difficult jobs in my life, but this is not one of them. Ukrainians love to laugh so the conversations are usually light, with many anecdotal stories, and the Workaway staff will learn much about Ukrainian people and their culture. Additionally, students often meet after the classes for casual conversation and drinks at local cafes and bars.
The city of Chernivtsi is also an interesting and beautiful city in the Western part of Ukraine, over 700 miles from the conflicts in the East. The city was a major commercial and cultural center during the Austrian-Hungarian period of the last 19th and early 20th Century, and has many beautiful historical buildings and local monuments. It also has a fascinating history of strong multi-cultural diversity and religious and ethnic tolerance, of which many local residents are quite proud.
The city is also just a short drive from the beautiful Carpathian mountains for glorious mountain hiking/camping, and winter skiing resorts.
We are looking for persons to help with our English school in 2018. We operate 2 hour classes for our adult students, and of that time 30 minutes is dedicated to "conversation with a native speaker". The teachers organize the conversations around the English language unit topics, and prepare conversation topics for the native speaker and students, and sometimes just fun English-learning games to help the students practice.
There are multiple classes operated during the day and evening, so the workers will be moving from one class to the next. There are also multiple English language proficiency levels,
We operate our classes 6 days a week. The youth programs between 3:00 - 5:30 pm, and the adult programs from 5:30 - 9:30. The Workawayers will be expected to help during these times, but on a 2-day on, 2-day off schedule, So over a 2-week period, you will be helping 39 hours, or roughly 20 hours per week.
A semi-private room in Directors apartment is available for Workaway volunteers. Plans are underway to find separate accommodations for multiple workaways. We do provide a weekly stipend sufficient for hostel accommodations but volunteer would probably need additional funds for other living/traveling expenses.
Chernivtsi has multiple nightlife locations both in the Center where the school is located and further out in the suburbs. The city is on major train and bus routes, although the transpotration systems tend to be quite outdated. A new train line was recently added to the city of Lviv, which is a major transportation hub within Ukraine and Europe. And the city does have two daily jet flights to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
The city has quite an active youth population with many events, social events and nightlife. There are quite a number of people with English level proficiency, especially under the age of 30, and if you are an American, you will be automatically awarded "Rock Star" status. Be careful if you're not looking to settle down here in Chernivtsi, you will be tempted by many interested suitors! :)
Our city and surrounding county is blessed with twelve (12) US Peace Corps volunteers, who regularly come to Chernivtsi for the weekends!
